If you had a 200-300 acre grain farm, no cattle and could only farm part-time what model of tractor would you pick? Conventional farming with tillage. Any model including two cylinders and even none jd models. Last, why would you pick that model?

50 Horse range and enjoy the Life...!!

A JD 520 would do it nicely and a 620/630 would do it with ease..

There are plenty more to choose from.. 300 Ac is not that much to get done...

Bigger always makes it easier....

Ron..

300 acres is a HECK of a lot of ground to cover. "Grain farming" can be corn/beans or wheat, oats, or other
small grain. Lot more work getting a crop from corn or beans. But even to be timely with small grains I'd
start with a 125-130 HP tractor. You need to disk everything at least once to start and farming part time
you need to cover ground in a hurry.

Bigger question I have is how your going to harvest your 200-300 acres? Hire a custom harvester?

I agree, it is a lot to cover if you have a job, I would want something 140-180 HP with cab.

200-300 acres is alot if you are working full time. I have been doing 250 acres part time for the last 30 years while working full time. Right now I have an 8200 for tillage and a 4230 for planting, spraying, augers etc. You don't have alot of spare time and you have to go when you can and the weather cooperates. I had a 4450 mfwd that was a good choice but the 8200 was a nice upgrade. I do miss that 4450 though

A Deere 520 would be able to disk or field cultivate about 5 acres per hour so to get over the whole 300 acres would take 60 hours, more or less. It would require two full weeks of working three hours each weekday evening and 15 hours over each of the weekends to accomplish this. We all get our fun in different ways but I believe for me the enjoyment would cease by Thursday of the first week. I'd vote for nothing smaller than the 4450 that 4320Scott mentioned and be able to knock out a 40+ acre field in one comfortable evening.

.A nice 4440 will run about $20K and will depreciate very little if nice.It would be hard to justify a planter and harvesting equiptment.Used good equiptment market on smaller equiptment is soft in our area.Red tractors bring about 50% of green ones and work fine.

Now remember this is a JD forum.

Red tractor might work but if given a choice I think the green ones are more user friendly at least for me. I hear the 88 series red tractors are nice but I've never been close to one.

I was thinking along the lines of an unstyled B. LOL.

The people I bought mine from farmed more than that I think back in the old days.

Brandon,
That part of being sick of it by Thursday made me laugh! Thanks for the opinions everyone. I do 40 acres now with a 620. Wife and I are looking at getting up to 300 so I was wondering what would be possible. With a super tight budget we may have to plan to rent less and work up from there. All harvest and hauling would be hired out like I do with the current 40 acres. Have a chance at a 5020 that a friend of mine says would be a good fit, but I am starting to lean towards maybe a 4430, 4440, 4640 or a 4450 if a cheap one came up.My reason would be for power and parts. The 5020 or 4430 would be the best for our price budget as we are VERY new to it all. As I said I am doing all of the work on 40 acres with a 620 now,I LOVE using the 620, but we would not be able to go past 100 acres and have the time with nature and full-time work to get it done. Again any more thoughts are appreciate, but thanks already to the ones that took your time to answer.

Where do you live? i have a running, operating 4440 with cold air conditioner I'd sell you for $12K. Yes it needs a little tlc but everything operates as it should.

What's the catch ? LOL. Is the working a/c mean it's an open station on a cold morning ? Ha Ha.
Seriously must be a local thing. As here in Ohio open stations sell for that.
Send it on up here and put a for sale sign on it.

No catch just needs some more TLC.
SGB,reman compressor with new expansion valve & receiver dryer. I going to list it in photo ads as soon as I get photos of it

4440 are hard to beat. Your going from 40 acres to
300 overnight with a budget? I work 50-60 hrs a
week and farm 160+ at night. 4440, 4020 side
console, 3020 gas, and a L2 gleaner for harvest. I
don't have 40,000 stuck into everything but it's
taken me a few yrs to accumulate.

If your in the market for a bigger tractor for the 40 you may need to upgrade a few more things...
