3020 GAS starter

hello, fellow DEERE guys, anybody know of a stronger starter for a old style 3020 GAS that will FIT with that carb kinda in the way?

I don't know of a stronger one, but I got mine where it starts really good now and here is what I did: first, had the starter gone through by an electric shop--new solenoid, gear, etc and all cleaned up. Then installed a relay in the starting circuit ahead of the starter solenoid as was recommended by many on this site. That little wire going to the transmission safety switch just does not cut it to activate the solenoid for a good starter connection. Then had a new 2/0 battery cable made and soldered the ends on. Cleaned and improved the ground cable connection, and made sure the starter mount was clean and making good contact. Probably should have ran the battery ground right to the starter mounting bolt. Also put in a pertronics unit instead of points. When I first got the tractor it barely wanted to start. In fact, I got a good deal because he couldn't get it started to show to buyers. Now it is flawless and has never failed so far.

How is a LPG starter stronger than a gasoline starter when according to JD parts they utilize the same field coil, drive & armature IE same starter?

Jim, I'm just speculating here but perhaps
it is because the LP starter is what is
furnished as the service part now. Years
ago using an LP starter was very common to
help starting. There used to be two
different part numbers for starters for gas
and LP. We never sold any gas starters as
the LP starters worked better for the same
money. Mike

Thanks for correcting me. There were very few gasoline or LPG New Generation tractors sold at the dealership I worked at and I forget that the parts catalogs have been updated over the yrs leaving out valuable information.
Thanks again for correcting my mistake,Jim.

Don't feel bad, Jim. We are all still
learning. I learn every day. Sometimes
it's what I forgot yesterday. ..:) Mike

Well Here is what is currently on our 4020 gas. Don't know how it will fit on yours ? I did this because it was just laying around.
I had a JD500 diesel 24 volt starter that was converted to 12 volts. Field coils and solenoid is all that took IIRC ? didn't work the best on the diesel so it laid around the shop to be converted back to 24V as need arise. So then the 4020 gas starter died. So I take the two apart and start looking things over. Starter drive from the 4020 12volt smaller starter fit into the converted 24 volt starter and then it bolted on the tractor and there it remains.
This may work if you happen to have some spare parts laying around. LOL. Otherwise sounds like you will be better off finding a new replacement off ebay.

i'm still a tech. at the dealership, this 3020 was slow on cranking the other day as i was on the farm for a
tuneup. i put PERTRONICS electronic ignition on a few years ago so no more points to wear out. the battery was
not very old, cables looked good, charging good, maybe starter is weak, just thought someone on here might have
FIT a stronger starter on a gasser. i'm using AUTOLITE 386 spark plugs as this tractor is hitched to a feed cart
year round and idles and piddles around.

I looked up a new replacement starter that we would sell, and the same unit is used on gas and LPG from the 4010, 3020, and 4020 to the end of production.
We use 14 gauge wiring on the starting circuit for the John Deere's through 1969, and there have not been any reports of starting issues for the spark ignition or 24 volt diesels w/o using a relay. On original or OEM JD replacement harnesses, there can certainly be issues with poor connections at the "Twin-Lock" connectors joining the engine, instrument and switch harnesses together, which can result in poor starting performance.
