Model A flywheel removal?

Trying to remove the flywheel on a 44 slant dash tractor.

How does the casting for hand starting with the steering wheel come off of the flywheel itself? I thought it was just bolted on but after removing the bolts it refuses to come off. What am I missing here?

I'm also not sure how I am going to get at the bolts behind the flywheel that secure it to the crank. I've seen that there was special tools used by the dealers to get at these but is there any other way?

Yes, the steering wheel adapter is just held on by the 2 bolts, its probably stuck due to paint and or rust, give it a sound tap with a hammer. The flywheel bolts require a special wrench or with a little ingenuity you can design an adapter. I made my own using 3/4 drive sockets and extensions.

I did give it some heat and a few raps with a small sledge hammer to no avail. Maybe I'll take a block of wood and get a bit nastier with it next time.

Use some good penetrating oil (NOT WD-40) and let it sit for a day. Apply some heat (not enough to peel the paint off), while 'warm' take a 2# mallet (steel preferred) and smack it sharply all the way around the perimeter (1/2" - 3/4" spacing). I bet you 2 beers it will come off. HTH
