Ok, the other day I posted a question about JD model B and which one to buy . Well the B's were junk. I bought an A instead. serial # in 535,000 range. They said it runs. Yeah Right I thought. But I bought it for 400 bucks. I hitched a ride for it from another buyer. Ok, got it home and I thought. Man how am I going to get this in the shop. Well I poured a little gas in the tank,. choked it, open the relief valves, rolled it over and in a matter of minutes it was running. drove it in the shop and shut it off. Ok, figured who knows how long since last oil change. Nasty looking grey water condensed crud. Drained it and filter. pored some kerosene in crankcase and let it drain. Is there only the 1 oil plug drain between oil pump plate and filter housing. What are the 2 plugs just rear of the oil filter housing? Its sitting in shop dripping right now till I hear from you guys what to check out on this my first JD , Thanks in advance guys.

Yes, there is "[i:654c4848f0]only the 1 oil plug drain between oil pump plate and filter housing[/i:654c4848f0]."

Take a look at the photo below of the engine drain plug on "Easy" our 1946 Model A.

The "[i:654c4848f0]2 plugs just rear of the oil filter housing[/i:654c4848f0]" are the transmission front drain plug and transmission rear drain plug.

Take a look at the photos below of these two transmission drain plugs on "Easy".

You might consider checking the transmission oil level.

Take a look at the transmission fill plug on "Easy".

The transmission oil level should be full at the threads.

You might also consider checking and cleaning the oil cup on the air cleaner.

Hope this helps.

Both good pieces of advice. Thank you. I changed motor oil and filter. Then ran it a bit . I plan on dropping oil again next day or two for a good flush. At that time I will check the transmission and air cleaner cup. Grease the fan shaft etc. I have another plug in the vacinity of the front tranny drain but it is more off.to the right side. Cant remember for sure but I think it was just aft of the front tranny drain. I see on u tube videos old timers lolder.than me rollinh them over easy as pie and they just fire off. This old dog tales some effort to hand start. Also, I aint qwite fighered the easiest process to use when starting. What I been doing is turn om fuel
Crack throttle. Full choke.. roll it over. It will usually pop but not catch. After that I close choke but it dont seem to want to start. So I go half choke. I think I have to open throotle more at the very beggining. What say you. I also cleaned and gapped the J18 plugs that were in it.

When you decide to drain the transmission---be sure to have two 5 gallon buckets handy. Why do I know this?? An old guy told me. The transmission holds seven gallons.

The method described above is basically the same that is used for starting "Uncle Earl" our 39B.

Hope this helps.

2 things to Remember Religiously....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1... NEVER Tighten the Oil Filter Cup more than Hand tight..

2.....NEVER Force the 3 Bolts in the Clutch..BE NICE in these two places...!!!!!

Ron..

That may be the drain plug (small one) in the 1st Reduction cover..

Good idea to pull it and you may need to probe it with a wire to get it to drain..!!

Oil in there can get nasty...!!

Ron..

Ok. I will do all the above suggestions. On a busjness trip in western mt right now so cant get to it till saturday. I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks guys.

Wow you did well, I bought a 44 A 4 years ago for 300.00 , I haven't heard it fire yet.
So far I've put over a grand in pieces & parts, I now Have everything to put it all back
together ( I THINK ).. Just too many iron's the fire. Hind site tells me I should have
never unloaded it off the truck, I should have just removed everything I wanted or needed
for parts, but dummy me decided to save it...... I will be smiling someday, when it does
roll out of my shop under it's own power, a Hand Built 44,45,46,47,48, 52 & pieces from a
54 60 Johnny Cash Deere by RLA....

Just lucky I think. It was a big au tion with over a hundred tractors. But most were obviously junk.

Same comment for an unstyled D? I've had a friend's D for several years but just now getting around to running it some. The oil filter was very tight and after removal I had to tighten it to keep it from leaking. What am I in for?
