4020 Hydralics

JD 4020 hydraulics, after it sits for awhile the hydraulics are slow and make a chattering noise and is jerky, real slow. After a short period of time the chattering quits and hydraulics work fine. What is the cause and does it hurt anything to leave it like this.
Is this a simple fix?

Mine has done the same thing for years. Have a loader on it but I just let it idle a few seconds after starting and then everything works fine.

After operation while sitting idle hyd oil drains back to sump. After cranking engine it takes a little while for oil to refill empty lines. You can install a check valve to solve problem. Do a Google search under the name "Gerald J" and I think JD check valve installation bulletin will appear.

My 1965 JD 4020 power shift does the same thing intermittingly. I read the service info posted by Gerald J and the service bulletin if for a side console 20 series. I'm curious to know if there is a similar fix to the early 4020's.

I currently have the power shift pulled out and rebuilding the clutch pack and planetary pack and if there is something that I can do to fix the intermittingly hydraulic chatter now, that would be fantastic. I am open to all suggestions!

On second thoughts, since this is a power shift, the transmission pump does not stop when the clutch peddle (inching peddle) is pressed in....

Make sure and have the clutch out for a while before using the hydraulics, I find that helps a lot.

Serial numbers listed(encircled in blue) by G J are for early 3020/4020 not late models.

I missed that the serial numbers were posted, however since it is a powershift I cant see the oil draining back to the case since the transmission pump never stops unless the disconnect clucth is engaged.

Trans pump quits turning IE pumping oil on a PS trans very similar to SR trans when engine is stopped. The check valve is designed to stop hyd from draining back to sump when engine isn't running.

Draining loader oil back to the transmission case is not the correct location . The transmission charge pump can not keep up with the front pump.
Installe a ported filter cover or a T in the rockshaft return line on the left side of the transmission case. Return the loader oil between the trans pump discharge and the oil filter inlet side.

You need to brush up on your reading comprehension as this thread has nothing as in ZERO as in NADA to do with a frt end loader plumbing.

Well, there is a JD 158 loader on my 4020....
And yes it is plumbed into the rockshaft return line....
Maybe Mr. Thinker was really "thinking" about the question and pieced it all togather, LOL

Would have been better if that answer had been cut and pasted into the 4010 loader question as intended. Instead of into the 4020 loader question.

What 4020 loader question as no loader was mentioned in this thread until your post?????????? I think I smell smoke from your famous. smoke screen

As I previously stated I think you need to brush up on your reading comprehension if you're going to work for Richard
