8440 update on oil leak Tim S

Took most of the day to figure out what was going
on. All filters were clean. Had been changed in the
spring. The sump for the clutch pump had nasty on
it. Cleaned it and then strained oil and put back in.
The hydraulics picked right up like it was supposed
to. Next as it was idling the oil started gushing
around the engine to clutch housing, running down
both sides. Back to the book, and the screen for
the transfer pump was plugged. I drained a lot of
the oil I was missing out of that hole. Hopefully
things will stay balanced now. I am hoping that the
material over the sump screen came from the hi-lo
clutches that were replaced not long ago. The rear
sump just had nasty gunk, not clutch or break
material. I guess a lack of the right kind of
maintance.

I have seen this before, the clutch housing sump screen gets clogged up with some of the "checks" off the clutch plates, this can happen and still not let the clutch slip on an 84,,but as the clutch housing floods the flywheel trys to pump it some where, and that is ether through the gasket or the rear engine seal,,was the engine gaining oil?? You are going to be splitting it at the clutch housing and may as well service the clutch, seals and rear main seal, there are 2 basic methods of doing this method A is splitting the frame and front end off leaving the engine hanging on the clutch housing, method B is slitting it and letting the engine roll with the front axle,, ether one is a big job..you can contact me if you want..I have done a lot of them..

No wasn't gaining oil in the engine, but was coming out near the top of the housing. If the drip at at the bottom of the clutch housing gasket remains just a drip, I'm going to hook it back to the auger wagon and give it another go. I didn't clean the sump screen when i rebuilt the Hi Lo, so maybe those clutch discs were the source of the material. It needs to come down and be looked at, but was hoping it would hang in there until harvest is over. We've got some other mfwd tractors that could pull the cart, but I prefer an articulated tractor for the job. It's a shame our CAT has no Pto.
