730 engine smoke

Hi everyone! First post here, just brought home what is supposed to be a '58 730 SN 7303349. It is a row crop with PTO, 3 pt, single hyd., and JD adjustable front axle. Drove it around some and it will smoke like its under load in 5th going down the road. Also found that the radiator leaks and the pivot pin for the front end has alot of wear.

So now begins the fun! I would appreciate any help that I can get trouble shooting these items and I'm sure there will be more to come. I would also welcome any information that can be found about the tractors SN.

Thanks
John

John, the 30 series production register shows your tractor is a 730 electric start row crop. It was produced in 1958 but is a 1959 model year. It was shipped Oct. 24, 1958 to Oklahoma
City thru the Kansas City Branch.

You might change the fuel, just to see if it has been loaded with ATF..some folks pour in too much..!

Then see if it still smokes under a light load...it should NOT (except for a LOAD like a 4x16" plow, in 3rd gear)..or 4th gear..!!

I hope it is Black smoke, but the fuel is suspect until changed...

I like 15-40 with one quart of straight 30 wt, just for insurance..!!

Enjoy the Power of that Brute..!!

That is one of my pet peeves. I see tractors at shows with signs on them saying they have a 1956 620 or 720, or a 1958 30 series. They were some made those years, but as far as John Deere was concerned the 20's were 1957 and 58 models, and the 30's were 1959 and 60 models. Except the 420, they were some all green ones that were 1956 models. If you buy a car that is made now, it is a 2016 model, not a 2015. If you have a 520 thru 820, it is either a 1957 or 1958. A 330 through 830 is a 1959 or 1960 model. I am old enough I remember when they made them.

It is black smoke, how much ATF should be in 20-25 gallons of fuel? I assume this is for lubrication purposes only, would Marvel Mystery oil work as well?

We would have to turn this tractor up to pull a 4-16. When I was growing up my Dad had an 830 that we pulled a 4-16 with and it could be a good load. Would like to find a plow for it after I get all the mechanical things up to par. We still have an old JD CCA cultivator in the weeds, I might have to drag that out.

mystery oil is the thing to use, not atf. i would never use atf in a diesel engine injection system. there is friction modifiers in that oil and i sure dont want abrasives running through tight clearances wearing out stuff. you may as well throw some sand in too! that was to make the clutches grab better in the auto tran's. use mystery oil as thats what it was designed for. yes oil is oil but you need to know what additives are in that oil. a cup or two of oil to each tank is good.

Black smoke would have me thinking there may be an obstruction in the air Inlet or the pumps are set way too high..

As I recall, mine are set at "12" and see no smoke in 3rd with 4x16"..

Some ground pulls harder than others and may well make a big difference, but mine is pretty average..not harder or easier than the norm.

I was thinking that maybe you have fuel in the tractor that is Heavily treated with an oil additive that may be causing it to smoke..
