The gauge for the transmission if fluctuating up and down. I want to check the trans filter screen. Do I have to drain the whole rear end to do this? It is an early powershift tractor.

Yes the screen is on the bottom...do you have any issues going on with the trans??,,I would check with another gauge just to be sure..

In lieu of draining trans you can put the nozzle of a shop vacuum in hyd filler hole,turn on vac to create a suction while screen is checked.

Everything works fine. The steering, loader and three point are working. The gauge will be on the low side and then spike up to the high end and back and forth almost like it is not getting enough oil. The level is in the safe range.

You probably need to inspect the trans pump pressure control valve. IIRC it's the valve in the middle.
