HELP! I HAVE A JOHN DEERE GYRO CUTTER, MODEL 407. THE GEAR THAT FITS ON THE HORIZONTAL DRIVE SHAFT NEEDS REPLACED. JOHN DEERE TELLS ME IT IS NO LONGER IN STOCK. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND ONE, NEW OR USED. PART # W12020 - 23 TEETH AND 540 RPM.[/b]

I wonder if the large gear out of a 507 will work? same size bearing used but I can't come up with a tooth count they look near the same and available W10217

I looked as well, Tim, and notice there was no tooth count listed. The 507/527 cutter is a light duty, multiple rotor cutter where the 407 is a heavy duty, single rotor cutter. I looked at the Parts Depot site and the opposite gear is available but not the one wanted here. With the cost of a new gear it would likely be better to find a used gear somewhere or just throw in the towel and get another cutter. Mike

I did a search and the gear is available at a site called 777 parts (W12020). It did not list a price. The gear is also used on 727 and 737 cutters as well. Hope this helps some. Mike

The gear box condition is important on any model, I would try to have a look under the cover if possible before buying a used one. A guy gave me a nice looking 709 mower a couple years ago because it was ran out of oil and ruined the gears, to have it rebuilt was too much,, I bought a one with a wrecked frame and a good gear box cheap and am going to do a gear box swap, resealing the donor box while it's off. Having a bad lower seal is a killer for a gear box, and when the seal goes bad most of the time the oil gets away with out the operator seeing it,,it's a good idea to check the oil level every day of use. And some will put gun grease in instead of fixing the seal, this is risky because some grease will sling to the outer part of the box leaving the bevel gears dry, corn head gear box lube has the best chance of working ..

JIM, buy the hub the size of shaft and the pulley the number of teeth and chain size weld the two together problem solved. can be bought at T.S.C.for 30.00 dollars. same thing happened to me on a 507

Sounds good EXCEPT there's no chain in the gearbox that Jim is inquiring about.

TEH FRONT BEARING WENT OUT AND DAMAGED THE GEAR BEFORE I REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THE DISCS ON THE CLUTCH WERE SLIPPING.

I REGISTERED WITH 777 PARTS. THEY SENT A MESSAGE SAYING I SHOULD HEAR SOMETHING BACK WITHIN A DAY OR TWO, BUT STILL NO ANSWER. IT APPEARS THAT THEY ARE A CLEARING HOUSE FOR ORDERS AND NOT SUPPLIERS OF PARTS.

THERE ARE TWO GEARS IN THE ASSEMBLY THAT ARE AT A RIGHT ANGLE. ONE ON THE DRIVE SHAFT THAT RUNS FROM THE PTO AND THE OTHER THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE MECHANISM THAT TURNS THE BLADES. WITHOUT THE W12020 GEAR, NOTHING WORKS. YOU WOULD THING THAT SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD THERE WOULD BE JUST ONE W12020. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Most Deere dealers and parts guys could really care less about a small sale,,it's not like in the old days...if it don't fall off the shelf to them they won't look any farther..at least that is the way it is with our Mega Dealer here...
