4630 Sump Screen Debris

Well, I got the fluid drained, and the sump screen removed from my '73 4630 w/ Synchro-Range Trans. Included some pics showing all the debris in the screen. Should I be alarmed? I have no idea when the last time the screen was cleaned, or the fluid/filter changed! I was hoping it would be cleaner than this! Maybe this is normal for a 42 year old tractor? Seems like a lot of brake bits in there, and some metal flakes, too. Could this be from not using the right hydraulic oil?!? I just bought this tractor, and only know about the last few years of it's life. What next?

It could be the wrong fluid, but what alarms me is that in the images I can see metal pieces, if it was me i would for sure clean the screen and see how many metal pieces there are, if there are alot then there might be another issue. I would also definitely get some more opinions.
Overall it doesn't look that bad for a 40 year old tractor, but I like to keep my tractor in tip top shape though so I'm assuming you do too  I respond to emails more often so feel free to email [email protected]

I've had to scoop out brake and clutch lining pieces
and metal filings out of the bottom of the sump in
everything from a 6400 on back. All said if its
working don't worry about it. There's a lot of places
for that stuff to come from. Three gallon cans full is
enough to block off the hydraulic inlet entirely. I've
removed that much from several old deer models
and put them back together and had them run for a
great many hours.

What was in the filter? Filter is telling you what happened since it was last changed probably more recently than the
screen. If filter does not have too much debris I wouldn't worry. Could do oil analysis.

You could use a magnet and find out which pieces are steel, which are brass. Don't know if some would float, but that might tell you if some are some sort of organic matter. Might tell you something.

I agree with the others,, it looks like some brake material, but not enough to worry about now,, I would check it before each season to see how it is progressing..and it's good to cut the old filter open and scrape it with your knife looking for shiny metal..

Can you or anyone post a pic on exactly where the sump screen is located? I can't locate it on a 4240.

thanks

I don't see brake bits but reddish brown flakes also steel flakes.
Could be from clutches but would guess from synchronizers.
Could be debris left from previous repairs.
Don't concern yourself with oil brand. That is in the past and
nothing you can do about it.
The tractor is too old to know what has been done to it.
I would clean the screen, change oil and filter and keep it monitored.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! Appreciate everyone's help!
I decided to cut open the filter, and give it a look. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely some metal flakes, and other debris, but not full of them. I was feeling pretty good about things...until...

The PTO seal was leaking. Figured this would be a good time to change it, since the oil is drained. I took out the six bolts holding the bearing housing on, and popped out the seal. Removed the snap ring, and pulled the bearing housing off the tractor. When I did, some pieces of metal, and what looks like bearing rollers, fell out from the transmission case!! I immediately got this huge, sinking feeling. What the heck is wrong now? I got a flashlight, and looked into the case around the PTO shaft, and then peered in the sump screen port, and found nothing. Not a single other piece of metal. I looked in the bucket I drained the last of the oil into, when I pulled out the sump screen, no chunks of metal or bearing parts. Does anybody recognize what these pieces could be from?? Is there any chance they could be leftover from a previous repair, and just washed to the back over time? Or is something coming apart now??

Just so you know, I used this tractor to plant 250 acres of soybeans this spring, and worked some ground with it, too. The guy I bought it from, has had it at least 6-7 years, farmed 350 acres with it, and has never had problems with the rear end, or had it apart. He just had engine troubles. I'm really hoping someone can help me identify the parts, and what they might be from!. Any knowledge and expertise' would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! By the way, the quarter was NOT in there!

Rings me of pieces from a broken clutch operating thrust bearing, Key numbers 3, 4 ,5, and 6, in the drawing, but way back there they'd be a LONG way from home!

I started a new topic on this titled "Metal Pieces In Transmission!!!" Since it's a new problem, I figured a new topic would be a better way to approach this?? I'm new on the forums, so not exactly sure what is the best way. Sorry for any confusion!
