Deere 9F-3R Transmission

Looking at tractor data at some JD utility tractors and many have a 9F/3R trannys.

What's your opinion of this tranny? I assume synchronized between gears and fwd and reverse?

I understand there is a park position on one of the shifters. Will the tractor roll away if not in this position - what would be the reason for P vs just putting it in another gear.

Looks like it's still used today in some of the utility Deere tractors.

Any info is much appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

(quoted from post at 22:36:13 08/28/15) Utility tractors like the 5200, 5420 and as an example a newer tractor like a 5065e.

You might get more information on forums such as Tractorbynet or Green tractor talk. All I know about those model tractors are their clutch pedals are hard to depress, clutch life can be short if used for FEL operation and the engines to me sound very noisy when running.

Not all 9F/3R trannys are the same. Some synchronized, some not so much. I have a 5065e that is not very synced. I had a 5410 that was Sync/Shuttle. The park is good, a very good feature; throw it in park with engine running for hook-up or to adjust an implement. Handy transmissions. The 2nd and reverse are like a shuttle.

We've got a 1996 5400 MFWD with loader using the 9/3 top shaft synchro transmission- second gear and reverse are directly across from each other and shuttle-like, with clutch use. It works pretty well with the loader.

The tractor did need a clutch around 3200 hours, as we bought it used I am unaware of previous use, but it sure did not look abused. I find I have little problem slipping from second to third gears, often without clutching if you match your rpms and are not under load. Takes a little getting used to the pattern:

2 3

R 1

but it is like second nature now. I still have to look down for the range choice (A-B-C).

As to TxJim's comments- our clutch pedal is stiffer than say our 2355N, but not terrible. The engine noise I hear is more from the hydraulic pump I believe near the front of the engine- it varies even by slight turns of the steering wheel at idle- kinda weird that it quiets down when working and makes more noise when not- maybe it involves the bypass set up, I'm not an expert. It sounds great when spooled up and working hard.

K Effective - you've got it. The way you use the 9/3 transmission in the 5000 Series JD tractors is exactly what the designers had in mind.
