MT radiator / no good deed shall go unpunished?

I took my MT for a 50 mile ride last weekend. As the crushed rock roads were dusty I got out the electric pressure washer when I got home. Electric washer is not real high pressure and I was mindful of the radiator, but after parking in in the shed overnight, about half the water from the radiator was on the floor next morning. So the decision is whither to go with a repair or get an after market one. The local shop's tank test indicates a new core is needed and repair would be $300 to $400. A new aftermarket one can be on my doorstep for as little as $300, but most are in the same price range as the repair shop wants. Thoughts? Advice? Experience?

I'm near Cedar Falls, IA - close to Waterloo, N. E. Iowa. How about you? Has the one you have been leak tested? Is it an original or aftermarket?

I would have it recored. Matter of fact I just drained the antifreeze to swap one of mine out with one I had recored. Cost me about $75 more than an aftermarket but the metal is a lot thicker and the core was actually made here in the states. Since I never get rid of tractors I wanted something that would last another 60 years instead of the 2 to 4 for the new ones.

BTW - There is no such thing as a good used 60 year old radiator. They may not leak but the core is rotten. JMO

Ditto to M-Man. Looked long and hard to find a good one for my LA and still had a good local shop go through it. I then had them go through the one thats on my MT.

I'm in Belle Plaine, MN 10 miles from the Pioneer Power show grounds if you've ever been to the swap meet. I'm at the show right now through the weekend. I believe it's the original but not 100% sure. The tractor was running when I took it off. You can reach me at double seven five, two zero double five. Area code is six five one.

Thoughts - you probably only want to repair/replace the radiator one time.

Advice - re-core the radiator.

Experience - we have replaced 3 radiators on 3 MTs and re-cored 1 radiator on a 40S.

More Free Advice - while the radiator is out of the tractor, replace the belts, radiator cushions, and lower radiator brackets.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the upper radiator support (Key 5), radiator cushion with rivets (Key 18), and lower radiator bracket (Key 20).

Hope this helps.

Good input - thanks. Unfortunately the previous owner seems to have done all the peripheral things, belts, hoses, vibration mounts, etc., but forgot about the radiator itself. Sort of done backwards, I guess. In fairness, maybe the radiator tested OK for him. I've had the tractor for about 10 years. I use only soft water in it and drain it in the winter. I learned early on that spilled antifreeze discolors the paint. Then too, antifreeze is a lot harder to hold in without leaks than is water.

Had the same thing happen with our 43B.

Cleaned the radiator with the high pressure hose and the radiator started leaking at the bottom.

I am driving from Cedar Rapids to Duluth this week, let me know if you need something transported.

DJB - thanks for the reply and offer, but I've decided to go with the majority of advice and re-core the original even though it may be a bit more money

David G - as you've maybe already read, I've decided to go with the advice of most and re-core the original radiator so the possibility of needing anything transported across the IA - MN border had evaporated. Still, thanks for the magnanimous offer. - Leon
