john deere B

Help from the John Deere pros. Heading over today to look at a 1946 John Deere b, always wanted a John Deere 2 banger, here are my questions, it is advertised needing rebuilt starter, will pull start fine, I asked if it smoked and he said not anymore then any John Deere 2 banger would, I would like to put a 3 point hitch on it and run a John Deere 3 point hitch #9 sickle bar mower from it...
question#1 - what is the ball park expense for fixing the starter?
question#2 - are 3 point hitches for a B easy to find and install?
question#3 - what do you think of the marriage of the John Deere B and the John Deere #9 sickle bar mower?

thanks dave

question#1 - what is the ball park expense for fixing the starter?

Depends on how bad it is. If armature is fried HIGH DOLLAR. If its just fields and/or brushes maybe a bushing not as expensive. Maybe just needs bigger or better cables or has a ground or ground cable issue???? Maybe the starter switch is bad (cheap fix) Maybe battery is bad??? If you have a local mom n pop starter repair shop around prob cheaper then a big store rebuilt or new starter. If starter you may be looking at $100 to $250 depends on where you buy or repair it and how much is wrong...........Id check starter switch and cables and grounds and battery FIRST

question#2 - are 3 point hitches for a B easy to find and install?

A JD 800 series hitch is harder to find and expensive. An after market like TSC or etc hitch is cheaper. Either aren't hard to install, they use the rock shafts to raise the lift arms. You may or may not need the correct power troll valve plugs which change hydraulic output over to rock shaft operation, only one works at a time you know. !!!!!!!!!NOTE installing the top link support and bracket can be challenging and cumbersome !!!

question#3 - what do you think of the marriage of the John Deere B and the John Deere #9 sickle bar mower?

Some of those 3 pt mowers have like a big u bolt clamp, it has to fit over the lift arm. That and the top link are the hardest things, no prob with the rest as I best recall, its been too long so no warranty here

My 38 long frame b does not smoke one bit. The only smoke ive ever seen from it was when i was dialing in the rebuilt carb adjustment. Withethe ring pack theses tractors have, if their smoking, they generally have significant wear issues.

This is just a comment, a model 50 with live PTO and live hydraulics might not cost much more than a B, and would be much nicer for running a mower

I agree with ss55 below. Some even came with power steering and in same condition wouldn't be $500 more. You don't want the one you refer to anyway, unless you are looking for a project. If all it needed was a starter, he would have put one on it to sell it. Pretty easy to say "it JUST needs this and JUST needs that etc. "They all smoke" yea right.

As far as the smoke goes, a wiff of it should tell you if it's fuel, oil, or coolant. If it's fuel it's likely the carb not adjusted correctly

This model B wouldn't be my choice to use with a #9 Mower, Nor would it be my
my choice for 3ph. Not saying it can't be done.

This model B would work better with a #5 Mower. Does this tractor have the Large
PTO or the Smaller size. It Might but I'm guess it doesn't sport a Powertrol box?

The Model 50 or better yet the 520 would be a much better match for your mower.
This way you could save your money & some of your religion.
