I am working on my father-in-laws 420 and have to find the serial number. The ser.no. plate has been removed from the location identified in the service manual and I need to know if there is an alternate location for the number. Can anybody give me a hand?

No. There is only one. You can use the casting numbers to determine the serial number range with the parts book. You can download the parts book free from jdparts.com. What are you doing to it?

Search this site for "420 replacement serial tag" or something similar. Over the years, I've seen posts where different people with Dubuque tractors were able to determine a tractor serial number from the engine serial.

Thank you for the info. Where are the casting numbers? There might be one just to the rear of the missing serial tag. It reads "M3349T". Does that appear to be what I need or should I be looking elsewhere? I'm trying to get it running - hasn't started in over seven years. The owner passed away and his widow wants to sell it but there hasn't been any interest due to it not running. I just finished his Ford 9N which was in the same condition. Runs like a top now!

Not talking about the casting number, how would that assist to ID a tractor?
There are unique numbers stamped into the block and transmission case for each tractor.

Casting numbers are on the individual parts. The one you mentioned is the center frame. Most casting numbers are the same throughout the series on each part but if there's a change during the production run the parts book will show the serial no where the change started. Serial number lists are published for each year so you can get a year by crossing the odd number.

Parts just to get it running will be the same no matter what the serial no is. If there's something particular you need just look it up in the parts book. The part will show the serial no's it was used. If there was a change it will show at what number. That serial number break is all you need (above/below)to order parts. If there's something you're wondering about just post and we'll try to help.

Where on the Engine Block and transmission case would I find these numbers?

No alternate location on tractor; BUT-if the engine block has not been changed, there are some letters and numbers stamped into edge of block right under the generator. With these numbers; get paper work from local J D dealer; you can get a duplicate serial number plate. It takes a while to get.

Now while I'm looking around the tractor I notice that it has an alternator that was clearly installed aftermarket. Where there many 12 volt conversions done on these tractors? I have also determined that the serial no. was under 100000 based upon the position and mounting bolts on the starter. That makes it a 1956 vintage as far as I can determine.

And if there are no numbers stamped into the block of the engine under the generator where else would you look. B&D mentioned on the transmission case where would those numbers be.?

Yes it's common to have a 12v alt on a worker. It's simpler and more dependable no matter how bad the purist hate seeing it there.
