530 WONT STAY RUNNING

My neighbor has a nice little 530 that recently starting to run rough. We thought it was carb related, since at first we could get it to stay running by putting it at 3/4 choke. We took the carb to the local Deere dealer, who "cleaned" it, and installed new gaskets. After getting it back, we checked fuel flow, which it is flowing great, and installed the carb. Even after holding the automatic fuel shut-off open to prime the carb, it still took a lot of cranking to get started. Then it only ran for approx. 20 seconds, first starting to backfire, then dying all together. NO adjustments of the carb made any difference. We could save it from dying momentarily by pulling the choke out all the way, then pushing it back in. Its actually running worse now than before we had the carb cleaned. ???? The only other info I have for you guys, is that when we started the tractor, I could instantly smell antifreeze. Could there be a crack or head gasket leak that is sucking air..??? Any help will be appreciated. Scott

What does the spark look like, is it blue. Bad condensers play games that seem like a fuel problem.

Ditto what ET said. I had a bad condenser act just like a bad carb. Good chance the dealer didn't get it cleaned out too.
Also had one with the rubber washer on the stem inside the fuel shut off stay stuck to the top and limited the fuel flow.

Under/behind the dash is a porcelain voltage reducer, some time those go bad. Had this happen a few times to me. You can get one at an auto parts store.

Classic sign of a bad condenser. The backfiring gives it away. If your two banger with a distributor starts acting lean and backfiring try a new condenser first. If it still acts up try another condenser.
