JD 4020 power steering and clutch adjustment

i have a early model JD 4020 and about two years ago the power steering started acting up. It started with no power steering when I would turn right, but recently left turns have no power steering. So no power steering at all now. The clutch is at the top now. Can it be adjusted without splitting the tractor into?

Do other hydraulic functions work... brakes, remote couplers, and 3-point, if so equipped?

As to the clutch free travel adjustment, look at the part of the pedal below the operator's platform and you will see a slot with a bolt in it.

Unless the bolt is already at the rear of the slot, loosening it and moving it rearward will increase free travel.

If it's at the back of the slot, the clutch is used up. (Or the fingers are set wrong.)

I haven't drove it since the left side quite working but when it was just the right that didn't work the lift and hydraulics stilled fine. This tractor was given to my dad and that is what he was told was wrong with it but he hasn't went and got it yet. This was my grandfather's tractor and he said to sale it when he died. With all this wrong with it my grandmother did not think she could get a very good price for the tractor so she told my dad that she would just give it to him so that somebody in the family would still be able to get good use out of the tractor.and it wouldn't be sold at a scrap metal price. I grew up driving his tractor pulling a forward ripper spotter with 71 John Deere planners out of it it's got a lot of sentimental value to me and my dad. I sure hated to see it leave the family but that was my granddad's wishes but I think it is in worse condition than he thought it was.

Welcome to YT
Where do you live. What the tractors yr model or serial number. Some 4020's are very valuable. There's a YT member that lives in Ohio that can repair steering valve & test it if you'll send it to him. I think I've seen where he charges $500 for this repair.

Yes keep it in the family,,Farmers become more attached to the equipment that they made a living on and grew up with than any other occupation..Most other people don't remember their car or house..we re-kindle memories with the smell of chopped corn and fresh dirt,,and the sounds of the equipment we grew up with,,but of course who spends more time in that kind of environment than a farmer...The 4020 is one of the most user friendly tractors ever made, the steer valve is ornery to get out but not bad,,the clutch split is very easy,, and I would be glad to repair the steer valve, $115 for the 0-ring kit and $250 for the valve...99% of the time that is all it takes,, that 1% is a ghostly crack some where in the valve...and I have only had one of them the past 5 years..

Dublin, Ga. It's a early model with the controls on
the dash. It also has tall narrow front tires. I think
the rim size is 17" or 18". I haven't seen many with
the narrow tall tires. It has a factory ROPS with the
yellow steel top

Hello from Soperton Ga. I also have an older modal 4020. If you need any Manuals or the like drop me an e-mail and maybe I can help. I put a clutch in mine last year and am now in the process of restoring and replace other parts as a retirement project.

Tire size you refer to is 7.50X18. I've seen a few tractors with that size of frt tires.
