sickle mowers

With a #8 sickle mower or #5 which tractor would be the best to use a model b or MT. Ive always have used a b but I also have a mt just sitting. Please give me your opinions on cutting grass hay in the mountains.

How steep are the mountains? Stability may be important, but you are the judge of that knowing your land. I use a #5 on a 50 on level
ground.

I would think the B is better, since it's probably heavier.

Do you have a need for live PTO? I find live PTO very nice to have.

"John B" our 43B is one of our best tractors to use with the No. 5 power mower.

Take a look at the photos below.

All three of our 51MTs and 51M have the "farmer tech" 3pt hitch as displayed above.

If our No. 5 power mower was going to be attached to one of the MTs or M, then a "quick-tach" bar would be needed.

Take a look at the photo below.

Note the "farmer tech quick-tach bar" on Ben Franklin one of our No. 5 power mowers.

Make a call out to [b:654c4848f0]hotflashjr[/b:654c4848f0]; he has an MT with a No. 5 power mower.

He should be able to discuss the benefits of using a No. 5 power mower with an MT.

Hope this helps.

For years Ive used a B with a #5 mower and Its about worn out. I also #8 mower Ive never used so I was thinking of going thru it and use it. All it needs a float spring and a pto shaft. The B ive been using is also on its last leg but I have another one and also a mt so thats why I was asking. The # 8 mower only has one hydrolic hose for the lift cylender where the #5 has 2 so not sure how to hook it up either.

I sure will chime in! I run a No. 5 with my MT. You need to have the quick hitch attachment that James shows in the 5th picture. You also cannot run a 3 pt hitch conversion. I have accumulated all original MT implements so this is not an issue for me. You mentioned you have the hydraulic lift on yours which may be the only issue. Unless you have added a set of remotes to your MT you will need to find some extra parts to put it back to the standard configuration. I would bet between this website and ebay you find them cheap/easy. Make sure when you mount the mower to the drawbar you bolt the drawbar in place along with using the locking cams. Mine vibrates a bit and will often drop a pin hole on the cams and that will make your day less fun. I run the cams in the middle hole because this gives me a nice level PTO shaft.

I mow a couple of spots with the mower. I keep around our pumpkin field clean which is rough grass, briars... basicaly unkept field. The MT doesn't really act like the mower is there even in thicker stuff. I rebuilt the mower so it has new knives and guards that have had the ledger plates replaced.

In the orchard I run I use it to mow under trees this year when our New Holland 451 broke. I chose to run uphill and the grass was thick. I had a bit of clogging but overall in thick heavy orchard grass it also did really well. Better than the NH 451.

I'd say if you can make it work on your MT reasonably cheap to go for it.

You guys make it hard to decide. I am going to leave the original B hooked up to the #5 for backup and still not sure which to use for the #8 mower. I also have a 50 I use for the rake, maybe use that one?

I currently run a #5 mower on a 50. I just have a couple grassy areas I trim up a couple times a year.

Growing up, we had one on an MT. It had the proper lift linkage for that tractor. We cut MANY acres of hay with that unit with no problems. An uncle of my Dad's had one on a B, which they also used for many years. So it's take your pick, I guess. Either one would handle the mower just fine.

The only other comment I would have is that it's a lot harder to get on and off of an MT than it is on a B. You might use the MT for raking and put the mower on your 50.

I sued a #5 on and MT for years, had the special hitch on it. Bought a #8 and used it with the MT but had to make some spacer blocks to bring mounts in on #8. Op manual shows they are needed with that combination. It worked good on MT also but you have to use cable lift.

Im thinking of using the B with the #8. Now can you help with the hydrolics ? the #8 mower only has one hose to the lift cylinder and the b has 2 hyd hose hookups, can I only use one or will I have to change the cylender. Sorry guys my spelling sucks. And thanks for all your help!!!

Agree; use the MT for raking.

The live PTO on the 50 will certainly help any mower.

I think your right James. Im leaning towards the mower on the 50 because of the live pto which I didnt think about thanks

Great set of discussions on mowers! I agree with those who said the B and a #5 may well be the best mowing combination ever. I mowed hundreds
and hundreds of acres with that setup on a 49 B. The mower was bought with the foot lift, but I changed that. We had a front mounted
cultivator/planter set for the B and the PowrTrol rocker arm unit that pushed the pipe to lift and lower the cultivator was PERFECT for
converting the mower to "hydraulic" lift. I just took the adjustable lift arm from the mower to the foot lift, slipped the clevis that
connected it to the foot lift, and hooked it to the big "o" bracket that holds the cultivator lift pipe. Then adjust the lift arm from the
mower so you can lift and lower the mower, and you are good to go! (It would work even better with live hydraulic, but the 49 B did not have
that!). I have done exactly same with that same old mower on my 51 A! There are some pictures on this site a couple of years back under my
name. Good luck!

Here is the link to the pics of my #5 mower and some others. LEN

Thats all I have ever used is a B with a #5 mower. Like I said the B is worn out and dont want to put the money in it. I do have another B but I also have a #8 mower that needs a little TLC but so does the #5. Just thought I would rebuild the #8 since it is newer (but never used anything but the 5) maybe I wont like it so I am keeping the #5 for a back up. I am also going to put mounts on the 50 and try it since it has the live pto. THANKS EVERYONE FOR OPINIONS AND HELP.
