Jumpy clutch

Having some problems with a jumpy clutch . I have a JD 620 I replaced the clutch and disks last year. I have adjusted it since then but in the hire gears 4,5and 6 gear are really jumpy. What should I do to help this issue ?

Thanks Dan

2 items are my list I have always checked first for jumpy clutch's.

Pulley support bearing, make sure it's in good shape. No up & down movement on pulley.

Drive pin on operating collar, make sure the hole isn't egg shaped.

Other than that , glazed linings. or worn/ seized up adjusting bolts.
I own about 10 of these & no 2 are identical in operation.

Jumpy is not good.....

It is possible that the spring steel washers R21647 that go under the slotted nuts of the
clutch operating bolts could smooth your clutch if everything else checks out.
I hope these washers are still available from Deere as I have had good luck
using them on my 520.
Good luck.

Did you use a reman pressure plate? I did one for a neighbor I regret using the stuff he brought, should have used the old one and just changed the disk. Many auto parts stores have a line on new at a great price.

Use R21647 washers under slotted adjustment nuts (3).It worked for me-clutch on my 620 works smoothly.

Take the Cover off the clutch and give it a really GOOD Dusting of Dry Graphite...

My 520 needs a dose twice a Year.. (I drilled a small hole in the Cover, to make it easy..)

Do not worry, the Clutch will NOT slip...

Yes, after the fact I see its a different tractor. We are so used to hearing about this that its a reaction.

Getting the slop out of the linkage will help. I also take all the metal clutch plates I can remove and hit them with a sandblaster to deglaze them.

Trade it for a Case hand clutch! :) Run both back in the day. Don't try standing on the ground behind the thing backing it up to hook up a wagon. And with the Case you won't have to put the tractor in neutral and engaging the clutch just to keep the first reduction gears lubricating the pulley/crankshaft bearings. Our new '51 B had no better handling of 2-16's in sod than the worn '40 SC case had been doing for years. Of, course the B creeper 1st gear gave it a bit of an edge if you could get traction and a lot more "fuss". Never forgave dad for not getting a new SC. IaLeo
