What size plow for John Deere Model 60?

I recently purchased a 1952 John Deere model 60 tractor. It is the gasoline type with rollamatic front and a 800 or 801 3 pt hitch. I would like to find a moldboard plow for it shortly to plow the gardens and plow under our hay fields when transitioning to another crop. My service manual states that the 60 was meant to pull a 2x16 plow under normal conditions, while my owner's manual states that under normal conditions one should use a 3X14 (and even a 4X14) plow. I would like to hear from anyone who has farmed with this old tractor before. How many plow bottoms did you prefer to use with the 60? Also, what size disc harrow can it handle? Thank you for your input.

Sincerely,

Peter Markel

Most of them pulled 3X14's in loamy or sandy conditions. 2X16 or 2X14 in heavy ground. 4X14 would be a rarity here and would have been on extremely light soil. For a plowday I would check with your local club to gauge conditions. Even here at home a 60 would pull 3X14 but would be down in 1st gear.

The 812 and 813 series integral plows were built for the 800, 800A, 801 series 3-pt hitches.
An example would be an 813 in various widths such as a 3-14 which would be good for a 60 in most conditions.

I've got a nice 3x14 model 810 for sale.It has all new moldboards, shears, landsides, frogs, coverboards.I'm in ohio.

I used a 3-14 converted horse drawn tow behind (side hill type - with rider!). Worked good in the soil we had. HTH

Our farm is in Breinigsville, PA. How much are you asking for the plow?

If you have good rear tires and the 60 is running well, 3x14" (WITH a Gauge Wheel) should be fine in average ground in 2nd gear..

I had an "All-Fuel" 60 and that one would only pull 3x14" in Creeper...!!

Guess it was about equal to a late Styled JD "B" for power..

Around here (Central Ohio) no Late Styled JD "A" tractors pulled 3x14" without having a Power Block...most pulled 2x16" or 2x14".

Remember, the plow had better not be rusty...!!

I have a nice JD 810 3x14" here too, if you are looking for a Good one..

Ron.
