820 transmission

I am sure it has been discussed here before, but here goes. My 820 transmission growls in most gears, what am I getting into to repair it and are the needed parts available.

All the bearings are available, some are pricey. Gears you'd have to buy used if yours are shot.

I've got an 80 with a very loud transmission, I replaced all the bearings ahead of the differential and a few gears with no difference in howl, but I know the differential has too much end play, meaning bad bearings there too, so that's next on the list, possibly the rear axle bearings too if I go that far.

I did my transmission a few years ago. Deere had a good portion of the bearings and for good prices. May have changed some, a few were through the roof. I made a list of the 820 bearings with JD part numbers and the Timken cross next to them. Please don't trust it completely, I could have mistyped or mixed things up!

Sliding Gear Shaft bearings
JD7359 (462)
JD8235
---
JD8140 (45290)
JD7444 (45221)

CounterShaft Bearings
JD7446 (39520)
JD8193 (39590)
I pulled out a 39589 of my tractor but the JD number crossed to a 39590, and I replaced it with that, which is MUCH cheaper)
(I used Timken SET408 to replace this pair)
---
JD8138 (45285)
JD7444 (45221)

Differential Bearings
JD8229 (612)
JD8136 (623)

Rear Axle bearings
JD7448 (47620)
JD8112 (47686)
(Timken SET411)

He meant, is it the old two cylinder diesel, or the newer three? cylinder diesel utility tractors

With that serial number, it looks like it's the two cylinder, so my info applies!

Brandon, I have noticed lately that what not so long ago what was a modern tractor is now considered one of yesterday's tractor. Mine is a 2 cylinder and I thought there might have been a transmission difference between a green dash and a black dash tractor without considering the 3 cyl. jobs as antiques. How much disassembly of the tractor is required to access the transmission bearings for replacement? Thank you RT

If you decide to dive into this, you'll need the service manual, and parts books. There are lots of little details that could be missed without them. There's no difference between green dash and black dash 820 that I can think of, only the 80s were slightly different.

To do the transmission bearings (the two gear shafts), you need to pull off the flywheel, belt pulley, the large reduction cover behind the belt pulley. The dash, fuel tank, and shifter cover. I found that both shafts had some bad spline wear for a couple gears and had to get them welded up and machined. The junk yard parts I found weren't much better.

To get the differential, final drives, and rear axle bearings you'll need to split the tractor. That's why I haven't gotten that far hahah.
