2510 platform removal

I've taken on the task of getting my father-in-law's one owner 2510 gas back into good shape. I do have it running after cleaning the carb, changed all fluids, and added about 3 hours to the 2870 on the tach. It needs a battery, and really needs new battery cables. I started to remove the platform to access the cables, but I'm not seeing the trick to get the platform off without removing several other things, especially the diff lock pedal. Is it do-able by just wiggling it out, or bite the bullet and start getting everything it hits out of the way? As far as batteries, it looks like a Deere battery is the way to go, as they list half again more cranking amps as the parts house batteries for $30 more.

You need to remove the pin in the dif lock assembly and have the seat in the rear position as well.A 2510 is one of the worst to get the platform off and it really helps to have two people.I have used some Deere batteries and they do hold up well but here they are twice as expensive as the others. You are doing the right thing by replacing the cables. Make sure to get a good heavy cable and clean up the spot where the ground cable goes. I often run my grounds down behind the battery box and attach them to the bolts that hold the battery box supports rather than up on top like Deere did.For general chores I use my 2510 alot. Tom

Don't run the tractor with the pin out of the diff lock mechanism as the hydraulic pressure will blow the spool out of the diff lock valve and pump all the trans oil out! Don't ask how I know....

I never had that happen and we often took them apart left the pin out drove them around to wash or work on them. I must have been lucky and will think about it from now on so that it does not happen. Tom

Like Tom said they are one of the worst to get off, and I neatly cut a bit off each side where it goes past the dash to make it easier next time..

Well, I've never tried to remove the platform on my 2520 but I did replace the battery cables without. Made mine out of welding cable and "snaked" them under the platform. Guess you could even tie the new to the old and pull it out while pulling the new one in place.
Maybe I'm missing something or you had another reason to remove the platform?

Ferd, There was only 1 of the 4 bolts actually threaded into the top of the transmission case anyway, and to the casual observer it looked like it would snake out of there pretty easy. At minimum I need to clean the mounting holes/threads to properly remount the platform. You're right about pulling the new cable thru with the old one, that will work just fine if there's no hold-down clamps along the way.

Thanks to all for the advice. Mike
