2510 power steering valve removed!

Well I finally got the steering valve out. That was 4 hours of work. Not extremely hard but time consuming. Now in process of disassembly. There sure is a lot of sludge in the bottom of steering unit. I don't see Obvious problems anywhere. Just really dirty In the bottom valve area. Ordered all of the small springs and check balls plus the rebuild kit. They were cheap in a Deere way! I see there is adjustments internal and external! Have not messed with any yet. Waiting for the service manual to arrive! One small spring is messed up but I don't know if that is what's causing the locking steering and ratcheting. Any ideas Tim?

That'll do it. My 4020 has a history of troublesome steering. The valve has been out several times. I've had just as good luck doing it myself as taking it to the local "experts". I took it apart myself after the first expert, and found he had stretched a broken spring and reinstalled it! The last expert threw a whole bunch of new parts at it, and it would only turn one direction! I got so I could take it out real quick. Tractor is pretty much retired now. If anything serious gets done to it again, it's going to Tim.

They are not to hard to rebuild. A clean bench, a service manual, the proper tools to set the valves (talk with your local JD Dealer about borrowing them) and a little patience will get it done. The hardest part is getting it out and then back in. Don't forget to bleed the system after you reinstall it.

(quoted from post at 16:22:54 08/23/15) They are not to hard to rebuild.

I guess I had the wrong wrench turners(mechanics) working under my watchful eye back when I was a JD dealer service manager as very few % of the mechanics could get hyd control valves(power steering or scv) adjusted correctly the 1st or 2nd time.

Yes the sad part is if you don't get it set right you will be taking it back out again...that is why I built this test bench..

Everyone has different skill levels....
The manual walks you through step by step. Without looking at the manual I think the valves are set to 0.001" and 0.003" clearance, if that's not correct it's 0.003" and 0.005" clearance.

Is the steering valve in a 2510 the same as in a 4020? Tim, can you give a ballpark figure on what it runs for you to rebuild and test one? My 2510 wonders all over the road, and it is narrow front so its not the alignment. I think it is the valve because it doesn't have the symptoms of a leaking steering motor, although it is due for new seals in that as well.

If I remember right you can also put it in a bench vice and hook it to a scv on a tractor to adjust it. I think it shows how in the book.

Put the steering motor seals in first if you think it needs them anyway. I have replaced a lot of them where the customer had someone else rebuild the valve and still wandered. Motor seals were the problem all along.

Tim how much would you charge to check it out on your bench? I can clean and reseal for that matter. It's not my tractor just helping an 83 year old friend! But he'll pay if it needs to be done!
