Hydraulic 4wd front axle on JD 4440's

Just curious JD guys......can you set the front axle to straddle 30" rows and still clear the hood when turning at ends?
How do these kits work? Heard guys have problems blowing seals????
Could a front axle be converted to another color tractor????
Thanks

I don't think they will go into 30" rows, and they are really worth thinking about,,if you could tie an 8N Ford under the front it would do more good...

Dang Tim you really don't like HFWD do you? I can't believe you mentioned FORD on the JD forum. :p

I'm pretty sure they will go to 30".
If they would work on anything an IH with hydrostatic tran would be perfect.
You should use the gearing from an old combine as they are meant to be used
with hydrostats.

They actually hurt the value of a 30/40 series. On a 20 series they work the same and that's not very well, but add about $3K to $4K to their value. If you want front wheel drive a 4450 is a nice unit w/MFD .

Not sure if they will fit into 30" rows as I have never used one planting. I hate to disagree with Tim about anything but I have had that PFWD on 3 tractors a 4620 powershift, 4430 quad and currently have a 4640 quad range that I bought out of Wisconsin just because it had the power front. No it won't pull like a 4960 MFWD but a lot of times it will get you out of trouble pulling a harvester or mower etc they are quick and maneuverable especially mowing. I have experienced very few problems occasionally a switch or solenoid and I do change hydraulic filters every oil change. Maybe I have been lucky.

I was thinking of trying to adapt one to a Massey 1155.
I have all kinds of power with that V8 but can't utilize it with all the spinning......but I need it to row crop down 30" rows as I sidedress 28% with this tractor.
I have no intentions of getting rid of tractor or spending the money on something else to replace it.......just need more traction.
My tractor was never built to put a drop box on to run a Coleman or Elwood front drive setup so only was would be hydraulic.

They really are not good enough to gain you any thing, they do not work as well as they do on combines since there is not enough flow or pressure with the tractor systems, yours included..a great idea that doesn't work,, Darn it...

You probably don't have the hydraulics to run it.
Also a lot of switches and valves to deal with.

No! Elwood made a FWA axle for MF's. I saw one in their shop about 1980. Not as clean of install as the IH but a lot cleaner than the JD install.

I think the problem with JD's HFWA on ag tractors was the pump & motors were way too small for what they were expected to do. They use HFWA on their road graders and have very few problems with it.

Yes the big problem is flow and pressure, the tractors were upped to 2500 psi but only had about 15 Gallon flow,, the Hydro stats have 40 gallon+ flow and spike up to 7500psi

We have a 1975 4430 with this front axle under it. We have planted with it for years. It is nothing compared to Mfwd. Ours is set at 30" spacing. We pulled a Deere 1760 12 row with saddle tanks for many years with it. It is a ok set up. We had to run a hydraulic oil cooler externally when we used the front end and hydraulic drive sprayer pump for planting.

Does anybody know how many gpm oil flow is required to operate this front axle?
What type system is it......Open center? Closed center? Pressure compensated closed center?

I had a 4630 with that front drive and as others have said it was not as successful as the MFWD models. Massey bought that same drive from Deere for it's combines and I also had one of those on a 860 combine and it worked wonderful. Much more hydraulics both volume and pressure on the combines thus no problems there. Yes they will work in 30 inch rows.
