JD3020 loader bucket tilt leaks down

John Deere 3020 with hydraulics on the dash has had a slow leak down in the bucket tilt for a couple of years, but a month ago it became quite quick (would leak down all the way in 15 to 30 seconds), and today the tilt will not work with heavy loads. I assume that I need to rebuild the valve, correct? Any help would be appreciated.

Before I would do anything else I would swap tilt and up-down lines to see if it is the valve or a bad cylinder .

You can get a 5000 psi gauge for about $15 then plug gauge in breakaway to check scv valve leakage. As suggested you could also change hoses from one side to the other but if both sets of poppet valves in control valve are leaking you still won't know if cylinder packings are good.

It could be a control valve or cylinder, my first bet would be blown cylinder, there is a good suggestion on here to swap lines and see if problem moves.

The first thing to do is set the bucket and then shut off the rear couplers If the cylinder packings are blown it will still creep down .I am assuming the loader works from the rear couplers .

Agree, did one a while back, there was a temptation to want to fix everything but only one piece wasn't working.

I switched the up/down tilt hydraulic lines. Nothing changed ... the down tilt is still strong, will lift the tractor, but the up tilt leaks down as soon as I release the lever back to center. Does this indicate that the cylinders need new seals?

Have you tried switching bucket control circuit from scv #1 to scv #2 or vice-verse? Put a load in bucket with bucket curled completely rearward then unplug hoses if bucket tilts forward with no drips from male hyd connectors then you'll know 1 or both bucket cylinders are leaking internally.

Easiest way to check for scv valve leak down is independently plug a hyd gauge in each port pressurize gauge then return control handle to neutral and observe gauge for lowering of psi.
