leaking hydraulic idler shaft on 630 JD

Got my idler gear and shaft out.I think the shaft is ok . Its a little blue on the outside end . At $700. it will have to do. Ordered bushings too . Would like to drill and tap the case for oil passage . Looks like a 3/16 compression fitting would fit a 3/8 taped hole . frightening job . Don t know how a guy would reach a tap in there . Thanks for any advice .It was this site that helped me get it apart successfully .

I didn't get them but they ordered them so if they are the ones I guess that will be good . Sure would like to drill that out . Do you think a guy would be successful ? Bushings are supposed to come Friday afternoon . Guess I could buy a 1/8 inch pipe tap but have put blood into this tractor . The job scares me a little . The bushing number I have is A3691R with a capital D above it. Supposed to exist . One side is loose like it was spinning in the gear .Hope you have a good day . Thank you.

You would have to remove the governor housing.

I did one on a 620 and I can't for the life of me remember if I did it on the tractor or if I had that gov. housing off for another reason ?

I took my governor housing off to drill it. The drill chips falling in the engine worried me. I used a long pilot bit and drilled it from the inside out, then used the correct bit for the pipe fitting and followed the pilot hole from the outside. I want to think that there is a dimple in the inside of the housing to help you get started, but it's been a long time. It wasn't a hard job. I blocked it up in a drill press. I think you could easily do it with a hand drill. Good luck with the bushings. They were NLA when I needed them, but the gear with bushings in it was less than $100 back then.
