hard head studs or not

I know I and others have asked this before but I couldn't
find it . Other than color how can I tell the hard head
studs from the softer ones ?

Good question, mine are the color of rust. I have no idea if they are hardened or not. I planned to use the unhardened torque specs and some permatex #3 and hope for the best.

Get some grade 5 Bolts the right length, cut the heads off and thread them. That's what I did, or just use the bolts. If U can't thread them yourself, Take them to a machine shop.

The stock head studs have a oversize (fat) thread on the end that screws into the block. It keeps the thread from pulling out of the cast block & it seals the water off from coming up the stud. The same with your manifold studs that screw into the head.

A hack saw will tell you pretty quickly. Soft studs should start to cut. Hardened studs won't cut as easily. Odds are your tractor has the hardened studs already if it's ever been overhauled, which is likely. Mike
