4010 3rd gear noise

This may be the same problem as a reverse previous post/ans.
When I shift into 3rd (stopped) it sometimes chatters or grinds and I immediately shift out of it. Shifting into 1st or reverse and then back into 3rd sometimes fix's the problem. However I am reluctant to use the (work horse gear), until I correct it. Which means a slow 2nd or faster 4th. Could this be the "Latch" that was referred to in the post dated 7-21-2013? This refers to the answer given by JD Seller. Any assist appreciated. I do have a hinecker cab on so not as easy to remove the cowling.

If it is not happening all the time in third then it sounds like a linkage issue. You can check the lower part down by the battery for wear and so forth. I think you will wind up pulling off the cowl to see what is going on up by the shift lever.

The suggestion by NY is a good place to start. A few things could compound to create the problem you have. The shifting forks could be wore (internal), linkage rods/arms wore, and/or shifter quadrant needs rebuilding. All this could create a under/over shifting problem when trying to adjust for proper shifting. If you shifter quadrant is loose I would rebuild that first with new bushings and weld up the shifter where it contacts the shift quadrants, if wore bad. After that you might get it to shifting by adjusting the linkage, if not and the linkage is in bad shape you'll have to replace it. I think it was Tim S who had a good picture of the worn shifter arms/rods to compare yours to.

Thank you for the reply's. I am going out to the farm this morning. and try to chase the problem down. I have printed some pages of the JD parts manual should help in checking out problem. Tired this AM, spent afternoon and much of night with German Shepard, first litter. Eight pups with one stillborn. Grandkids are floating on air as they witnessed the event. (not all night). Growing up we never paid much attention to when female whelped. Now champion dogs (puppies) worth over 1K get close attention. MNBob
