I have an unstyled JD A. I am changing the oil for the first time and was wondering if I need to replace the oil filter like now days, or is this the type that I can just clean/flush well and reuse?

It looks older like it's the reuse type, but maybe that's a look that brand is going for.

Thanks,
Robert

[b:a150d7a7dc]Practically [/b:a150d7a7dc]every Deere tractor from 1935 to 1972 used the same oil filter. The current part number is AR26350 I believe. Any John Deere dealer and most auto parts stores should have one.

Make sure the oil can has been changed to fit the new filter . The original was a bronze filter that could be washed . Your old filter is just junk .

How do you open the canister to remove old filter and install new one?

NAPA has the WIX filter under their own brand. It's NAPA 1242 and comes with 2 gaskets, one for two cylinders and one for 3010/4010. It's about $9.00.

The JD filter costs less but then you have to buy the gasket separately. Total for both is about the same or a little more than the NAPA filter.

Throw your old filter away,

Make sure to dig out the old gasket before you install the new one.

I appreciate everyone's help, but maybe I'm not wording my question right.

This old looking "canister" IS the oil filter (photo above). Or, can it be taken apart somehow to replace the filter that is inside? The FRAM one I bought looks pretty dinky to the one I pulled out of the tractor above that is shown above.

Thanks

My 38 BWH has a small micron reuseable filter. I just flush it with diesel fuel and drain it out, then reuse it. It is finer than the 1292. It would take quite a bit to convert over to the paper filters.

You're making this a lot more complicated than need be just like all your questions about the oil to use.

The white filter in your pic is a filter cartridge, not a canister. It's meant to be thrown away and replaced with a new one.

Take your white filter to an auto parts house or a JD dealer and compare it to one of the ones that I and others gave you part numbers for. You obviously got the wrong FRAM filter.

When you get the right filter, replace the gasket and put the filter in.
CAUTION: Don't over tighten the bolt on the bottom of the filter cover. If you do you'll break something up inside the oil filter assembly and then you'll have a real problem to deal with.

This CO-OP Sludge Master Oil Filter looks pretty vintage. It must have been awhile since it's been changed. It's looks to be pretty high quality though.

Thanks for everyone's help.
