1964 4020 Diesel oil pressure question

I've looked through the archives, and I think I know what the problem might be (sorry for the repeat).

Symptoms - Recently purchased tractor worked fine for 20+ hours (mostly haying). Hour meter does not advance, so no help on usage.

Yesterday, oil pressure light came on. Checked oil level, a little high, actually. No other symptoms. Shut tractor down, reviewed archives.

Installed mechanical pressure gauge at recommended port (just forward of filler cap). Pressure at (cold) idle = 20 psi. At 1900 rpm and warm, closer to 60 psi. Spec is 30 psi, warm, at 1900. My driver noted that there were some wild swings while baling.

My best guess (based on the archives) is that the oil pressure sender is failing, and the dealer I bought it from cranked up the pressure until the light went out.

Obviously, it may be something else (or something worse :( ). The replacement sender is pretty cheap. Any other suggestions?

20 psi cold at idle seems low to me. I have several tractors equipped with Murphy gauges, and all read at least 35 to 45 at idle (say 1000 RPM) when cold.

Rule of thumb on most engines is to have 10 lbs. of oil pressure per 1000 rpm's. I am relying on memory but I believe the sender is calibrated to come on at around 5 psi. Odds are your sender is bad. An easy fix to try. Mike

low pressure at idle especially when cold indicates worn bearings oil pump ect. if oil maintains 10 lbs or so at hot idle probably ok. if not consider heavier oil untill your season is over. How much overfull? a gallon overful will get the rods dipping in oil and then the oil foams which will cause pressure fluctuation. Paul

Slow idle should be around 800... actually Deere went around setting idle speeds higher (or at least 7-800) to keep oil pressure lights from coming on on the 30-4010s.

The O-ring on the oil filter can could be bad....worth checking I have found this to happen a few times..

I had that happen in my 3010 - oil doesn't smell like diesel (but I'll check again - and the oil filter o-ring). Oil looks pretty dang clean, so I'm pretty sure the dealer changed it (they have a pretty good reputation).

Solved! In the process of changing out the sender, I disconnected the electrical connection and plugged it back in to move the tractor out of the sun. Low pressure light went out just after starting. I guess the connection wasn't clean?

It's going to be a bugger to get out if I decide to replace it anyway. Can't get anything on it to unscrew it.
