630 clutch pivot pin

This is the second pivot pin, as I call it, that has come out in the past two weeks because the cotter pin gave up the ghost. I overhauled this pulley three years ago and I suspect I put the pins in pointing the wrong direction. I put them in with the head leading, or pointing toward the direction of rotation. The I&T manual has one picture, a parts manual reproduction, that shows the pin in what I think is the opposite orientation, with the head trailing instead of leading. I have never found a publication that states which way the pin should face. I'm sure there is a Deere manual somewhere that has this information but I don't have my hands on it. Which way does this pin point?

I've had this thing apart maybe four times in the past 40 years, one time to fix a broken ear that let go when one of these pins came out. I don't want that to happen again if I can help it.

Bad cotter pins???

FWIW, I recently did the clutch on a 4620 that uses 6 fingers with pins set up in a similar fashion. I doubt it's ever been apart before, and the heads of the pins were "leading" in the direction of rotation, with the cotter pinned end "trailing".

I have no idea if it matters, but I was careful to install the new pins in the same direction.

Also, FWIW, looking at the parts catalog drawing, it looks to me like the pin shown is shown installed the same direction as yours are.

Thanks Bob. I might have put in cheap soft cotter pins. Do you know where a person can get the strongest ones available? Deere? My SC Case has a similar setup with pins through the clutch fingers for push-pull. If those pins are in the wrong way the cotter will fail, the pin will drop out and you won't be able to disengage the clutch. It's happened twice. If I remember right I have the heads on the leading side there too. I used to run that tractor in parades pulling a float with a band playing away back there. Thank god it didn't happen to me in a parade.

I bought the pins and cotters for the 4620 from DEERE. I HOPE they are good quality!

Here's how I installed the pins on the 4620 clutch.

I can't recall ever seeing that problem before ? And I don't think I ever gave any extra thought as to how to put the pins in either.
I do remember hearing about a lot of 620&630 models that had the ears broken off where those pins go in though. Must me something about those models with close clearance back in there and then if the clutch driver goes on farther it gets even worse.
Wonder if a washer under the cotter pin would help it live longer ?

Mike I made another post with a picture up above before I read your post here. I'm thinking the clutch dog pins are too long and are sliding fore and aft, wrecking the cotter. The pivot pins could be 3/16" shorter and still work. The parts book does not show a washer that I can see. I have it back together but it only takes 15 minutes to get it apart again to put the proper pins in there.
