John Deere 730 power steering

Many of us that have worked on these old machines prefer genuine DEERE "PS oil for 2 cylinder tractors/tractors made before 1960", part # AF2235R. That is for quart bottles.

Of course, there are other opinions that regular Hy-Gard, etc. works just as well.

I remember the power steering being weaker when warmed up on our 630 way back when the mid-sixties when that tractor was just a pup. It's evidently somewhat the nature of the beast but it doesn't get better with age. I still have the tractor, still use it and the steering isn't any better for sure. I have replaced the pump seals but the innards are still factory and it has a zillion hours on it. 39 years of it's life was spent with a loader hanging on it. I have used Hy Tran and Hy Gard at times and they worked OK but it now has the fluid in it that Deere sells.

We had a 730 that acted the same way. We found the packing on the piston (steering vane) in the steering cylinder at the bottom end of the pedestal was worn, which
allowed oil to bypass to the opposite side of the piston. It was fine when the oil was cool but warm oil was able to bypass easier.
