If it charges? Generators are tricky, the have to be polarized for whether you are gonna hook your battery up positive or negative ground. Honestly, I would take it to shop to have them test it, and while there, I'd have them polarize it. What are you gonna put it on? That will basically determine whether to polarize it for positive or negative ground.
 
It easy to bench Motor Test it, see my Motor Test Paragraph,. Usually (NOT always) if it passes BOTH Motor Tests it will charge. Polarize it BEFORE start up on a tractor.

NOTE my test is ONLY for Class A Generators.
