Needing some tractor advice

Here's my situation. I have a 2510 that needs to be overhauled, engine and possibly transmission. This tractor was bought new on our farm.
It's been overhauled once. I have no idea how many hours. Hour meter stopped working years ago. You can tell from the worn pedals and
drawbar it has many many total hours. It has been used continually every year since it was new. It is used mostly for haying (about 400
acres/year) -raking tedding and other light work. I do have an upcoming need to use this tractor with it's loader to load manure. Using this
tractor to load manure will be time consuming and a chore. I am debating whether to spend money on this tractor or upgrade to a new one. If
a new one, what to get. I am looking for advice. Thanks.

Whatever you get if it is new the price would empty most peoples pockets. Might look into a lease return or buying used. There are some nice previously owned tractors out there and a lot of them come from estate sales, etc. I would certainly try to get a MFWD model if doing a lot of loader work, even though I use a JD 4020 a lot for loader work and get by just fine. You will get lots of free advice on here but you have to remember to consider that you are going to have to pay for and use the tractor, not those who are making recommendations.

Thanks David. I've been on here quite a bit and trust most of these guys for their opinion more so than I would my dealer!

Myself, I would find it pretty hard to part with a tractor that has been on the farm all its life and has served me well. That said, however, rebuilding that one completely and putting a loader on it and ending up with a less than ideal combo doesn't make sense either. Maybe repair it somewhat cosmetically and just keep it for old times sake, and purchase one that will meet your requirements. Are you loading manure, or just hay bales, of just a yard tractor; these factors would help determine your needs.

I'm not planning on getting rid of it regardless. I have the loader for it. Will use it for piled cattle manure as well as to load around 150 tons of poultry litter each year.

Engine kits for 4 cyl. tractors are relativeley inexpensive. If you can limit the labor cost, the overhaul won't cost all that much. Any tractor you find will likely need something as well. Most guys seem to get the good out of before putting it up for sale. I would be inclined to keep it. Repair it right and you know what you got. As long as it will do the job you need, that is the main thing.

I would fix it. I have a 2510 and it will be the last tractor I will sell(or maybe the 4020 dad bought new). For loader work consider a used skid loader and fix the 2510. It will not be cheap to go overhaul the engine and fix the other problems but it should last for years when finished. You can buy something else and in a short time it may need work as well. If it is not a loader tractor new linkage and shifter arms can make a worn trans. work for alot of years. You might consider updating to a 219 or 239 engine to give it a little more power. If your tractor is a gas I would consider changing to a diesel as there is a night and day difference between the two. The 2510 is just a great chore tractor that fits in great on a smaller farm.
