205 pull type mower

Got a 205 and the gearbox is in need of some serious help. Bearings went out on the input shaft and that in turn chewed the gears up real bad because I didn't catch it in time. I'm going to deere tomorrow to price out new gears and bearings IF that is they're even still available. My question is has anyone ever put a different gearbox on one of these and what did they use? I found some on ebay in the $2-300 range and I'm guessing the parts are going to be all of that if not more.
