Anyone have opinions on a 945 MoCo. Was looking for another machine and trying to decide. Any real difference between and 945 and 946 other than age? This one has flails...my old 1470 has rolls. Thoughts?? Are they good machines? Thanks.

I have a 946 with impellers. The term "flails" comes with a mindset that they beat the hay. They don't unless you want it to. You can set the machine to do absolutely nothing to the hay or you can be very aggressive or anything in between. They have been given a bad name in certain locations due mostly to people not knowing how to adjust them for conditions.

To my knowledge, one of the main differences between a 945 and 946 other than the 946 being newer is in the construction of the impellers. The ones on the 945 are mild steel where the ones on the 946 are made of tougher stuff. They are a very reliable machine. Around here there are a few holdouts for rolls but most people have gone to impeller machines due to lack of plugging problems and being able to take slick crops through better. You can run about anything through an impeller machine. Mike

I have a 956... it has a rugged cutterbar, but I WOULD NOT buy another. Here's why:

THe 945 and 946 hava an even number of turtles (cutting disks), while the 956 does not. With an even number, it is easy to lay the hay out flat, with a consistant pattern. With an odd number, there is always
more hay going to either the left or the right. We have tried different disk rotation patterns, etc, but it varies by crop to crop. In first crop, when the hay is heavy, I need to change rotation on two
disks to get the thing to make a full width windrow. If I don't, I get a full width windrow cutting one way, and narrow pile going the other. In lighter crops, those two turtles need to be turned again, or it
will throw all the hay to the outside, and leave nothing in the middle.

The 945 and 946, should be OK because they have an even number of cutters, but if you actually want to dry something, stay away from the 956.

WOW! Now that is some great info, I never would have thought of that issue. Thanks for sharing. I may never get to buying a unit that big, since all my tractors are 540 rpm PTO, but info like that might save me from making a big-time buying error.

We ran a 946 that we bought new for 13 years 4 cuts per year on alfalfa and mixes and 2 on grasses and hay. The term 10ft tall and bulletproof comes to mind, unbelievably reliable and easy to maintain. The worst problem we ever had was the day the bolt fell out of pivot cylinder (that was fun)we upgraded to a 4995 last year and have been very happy with that also
