A bore question

I have a 1946 A that i am rebuilding with aluminum Pistons and was wondering if it would be worth the time and money to bore the cyl bigger

Unless the bore is in very good condition, as in still round (NOT egg-shaped) and only a very few thousandth's wear, bore it to the next
available oversize. Do it right the 1st time. I have done an engine (many many years ago) and didn't bore it because I was a cheapskate. I've
always been sorry I didn't do it right. Your available bore sizes for an "A" are: standard (5.5"), =.045", +.090", and +.125". Don't expect
any noticable HP increase with the bigger bore, but the higher compression Aluminum pistons WILL make a difference.

I did the same to my 46 A . love the way it
runs now. Noticeable power difference, I
went .90 over on mine. Also pull the cam
and followers , have them gone over. Now
that's money well spent.

Yes. Check the valves and seats, and check
your main bearing clearances. Better yet,
take the head along to machine shop with
the block.

i plan to have the head gone through also but was wondering if there was any things I can do for more power and/or reliability while in there without spending lots of money

For reliability, I would change it over to
electronic ignition. No points. If you have
a distributer, of course. Gas manifold ,
#71 carb, will both improve performance.
And the list goes on, but the $ get higher.

It got a mag otherwise I agree on electronic ign
Was planning on finding gas manifold but don't know anything about that carb can you enlighten thanks

Chances are your A has a DLTX #53 all fuel carb. While these are OK, they were designed to operate on distillate better than gas. A straight gas later A has the DLTX #71 , which is designed specifically for gasoline. I feel as if they make the all fuel tractors run better and have more power WITH a gas manifold. The 71 is just an all around better carburetor.

I would also suggest you find a late A or 60 cam as they have a better grind or get yours reground to those specs. Also make sure to check your cam followers are good as many times they are worn.

Had a 44 model once that I put a cyclone head, as aluminum pistons, late cam with mild grind, and a big nut G carb among countless other things. Wow that a strong runner!!

Inspect the Bores carefully..they MUST be accurate and not worn...

Go with "Hi-Altitude" Pistons or equivalent that will give you at least 6.5:1 Comp for using it on a plow, etc.. and still use 87 Gas..
A New Cam with improved Valve Timing is a Big step forward to make better HP..
The original cam had NO over-lap what so ever...(in fact, quite the Opposite)..!!

Al LP Intake is desirable and clean and smooth ALL passages in the Ports as well as the Intake/Exhaust..

A GOOD 3-Angle Valve Grind id worth the money, too..

975 RPM is not enough..get the RPM up to 1,100 RPM to give the tractor something to WORK with, when it gets under a Load..

Ron..
