I need to take the rear right axle housing off to replace the seal and repair the brake.I've taken all the bolts out on the rear end housing, wheel and tire is off, is there anything else I need to take loose to get this axle housing to come off???I thought Id practice on a junker but I was out there all day and it will not come off, come out about 1 inch and stops, whaT AM i MISSING, THANK YOU RICK 870-919-2212 This is a 1946 H john deere that I'm redoing.

Gosh, Rick... I did the R&R thing on my '45 H last year and had no trouble taking them off. The only mating left when the housing backs off an inch is the mating axle splines in the rear end housing. You say the H is a junker... did any 90 wt drip out when you cracked the seal between the two housings? maybe rust has seized the splines due to condensation over the years.

When you get it off, stand it on the inner axle, pick it up and bump it down. The drum should fall off.

When it's time to put it back together, spacer #24, H442R is what rides on the inner seal. Make sure it has a smooth outer surface. Where H442R mates with the brake drum is a leaking point for oil to contaminate the linings. Put a bead of silicone around the drum splines/axle shaft before mating the H442R to the drum. Mine had an old rubber seal that was mashed flat into the splines, sealing oil out.

When you re-mount the repaired unit, leave the end cap on the hub end loose 3/8 inch or so, making sure it just fits in the recess. As you tighten the housing, make sure the pin is in the mating hole and turn each bolt a little in rotation. This ensures an unbinding fit. Unless you are replacing the bearings, just tighten it up. Then tighten the three end cap bolts a little at the time while turning the axle by hand. Should tighten and still turn by hand. If bearings are replaced, follow the manual for end-play using a feeler gauge and shims under the end cap.

Hope this helps. Oh Yeah, clean out the 1/4" weep hole at 6:00 in the housing. Jethro.

I replaced the seals and repaired the brakes on my 41 H a few years ago. The axle housing should come off with the axle in place. coming off about an inch or so , sounds like the brake shoes are stopping it. Have you backed off the adjustment all the way? It should be the square stud, forward side of the axle. Turn it out, you will see clean threads on the outside of the axle housing that way. (I hope the adjuster isn't seized too). I used Pat Browning's June 2009 service guide for this job, wish I'd met the man. HTH.

IIRC pull out 7 ? bolts and yank it out ! Make sure tractor is supported good so it doesn't fall over. Axle splines may be stuck in differential. If you pull both at the same time the diff. will drop down a bit and have to align to get it back together.
I had on once that the axle shaft was twisted off in the diff. ! Who would of thought an H had that much power ! LOL.
