540/1000 rpm/pto on a 3010

Question? I've read the archives on changing a 540 pto to a 1000 rpm/pto. I have a 3010 Gas, rebuilt and strong, as strong as a diesel. I'd like to run a discbine with it and that requires the 1000rpm/pto. Can I take the 1000 rpm/pto stub out from underneath on the belly and move it to the rear? I looked at the JD Part page schematics, the archived post talks about removing 5 bolts, Little bit at a loss there as to which 5 bolts the post was referring too. Any of you guys done this? Can you post some pics?

Thanks

Pto stub shaft is parts key 3 and there's only 4(four) bolts that attach it. Be sure to loctite the bolts when changing stub shafts.

Yep, I get how to change the stub. But just changing the stub to 1000 does not make it spin at 1000rpm. I've pulled the stub off to put a new seal (10) in the past. The schematic show different gears for 540/1000. So this is why I asked about the 5 bolts from the archived post. This is where I'm lost at as well to me it looks like I need to change gears. Right?

Yes the stub is missing from under the cover on the back end. I've owned the tractor for 10 years and just popped it off and checked finally and it's gone.

Thanks for the reply's too guys. Eventually I'll get it figured out. LOL

There are four bolts. No storage for stubs on 3010.
Switching shafts pushes that pin in or lets it stay out
in the stub that has a hole in it.
Here is the downfall. If you don't rotate the solid stub
as you tighten the bolts to allow the gears to align the
pin in front gets bent. This will require splitting the
tractor to repair.
Sorry I don't remember which shaft has the hole but you
get the idea??
Clean and dry holes and bolts and install with loctite.

The 1000 shaft has the hole in it,, and it could be possible that the 1000 part has been blocked out inside,, I have done that to several of them to get away from breaking that darn shift pin...

Thanks!!! Now it makes sense to me, as you install the 1000 rpm/pto stub it pushes the gear in. Now I got it! Thanks!!!

It's been many yrs since I converted 3010/4010 pto's to 540 only but IIRC the 1000 rpm speed is activated by spring pressure pushing on shift rod inside pto shaft and the 540 speed is activated by stub shaft protrusion pushing on shift rod which pushed on tiny pin in 540 drive gear.

Consider your available power before going to a lot of work and/or expense. 60 hp (which is being generous for a 3010) will be barely adequate at best for running a disc mower/conditioner even in easy conditions.

I would have a used Deere 1000 shaft for sale if you are interested post back and I will give you contact info.Do not buy a new aftermarket as they are not hardened enough and will twist with the load a discbine puts on them. I twisted two 540 ones before buying a used Deere. Tom
