Rack Pinion Wheels 1020 - Update

I followed the procedures everyone gave out to get the rack and pinion wheels moving on the 1020 I recently bought. I got all 3 large bolts loose, tightened the two small bolts, and whacked the ends of the axle a few times with a large sledge. Nothing. I however was able to keep tightening the two small bolts a turn a piece and have started to move things but not to the point where I can really get the hub moved. The pinion screw also will not budge at all still at this point. The problem I am running in to is that I am running out of room on the head of the small bolt to keep tightening it. Any further advice? I will try and get some picutres.

Look at the inside of the wheel and see what the wedge looks like. With the pusher bolts all the way in and nothing is loose yet sounds like the back side of the wedge is broken off. If nothing is broke you can take the wedge out and walk/pry the wheel out to where you need it. Unless it is full of fluid then its a little harder. chris

So no fluid in the tires and I am not sure I have the pusher bolts all the way in. If they are not all the way in then they are close. I do see where things have moved about half an inch by the wedge. The two parts on the back side of the wheel are no longer flat with each other. I just cannot get any movement out of the wheel without the use of the pusher bolts. There is plenty of crusty rusty where the wedge is. I'll get some more penetrating oil in there and try again.

Sounds like the wedge is loose. Tap on the tightening bolts to get it out father than the jack screws will take it. Then unscrew them and try and get it all the way out. Then you can drop the axle down enough in the centers as to clear the pinions that are stuck.
I have had good luck freeing the pinions by turning them to the down position when wheel centers off and soak the good. I then use a 3/4" impact wrench and try turning them both ways and keep working them until they spin freely. I used to drive the pinion shaft out and clean it all up but then I had trouble keeping them from falling out.

I cannot get anything but a wrench on the pinions and I am thinking that is because of the wheel weights and they may need to come off to really get at those.

I'll try these suggestions and see where I get. I think this will get things moving more than they are now.

You will need to take the weights off and drive the pinion bolt out, clean it up and lube it , the pinion cog can't turn because the bolt is rusted fast ,which will keep it locked to the axle..one thing will 'be-fuddle' the other...

If this is a set it up one time and forget it then just move the wheel where needed with the wedge out and then put it back in and tighten it up. But if you will need to keep adjusting them it is well worth the extra time to free the adjusters pinions up.

I have that disease where if I am going to do anything I am going to do it once and do it 100%. Everything will get cleaned and will be put to working order... hopefully!
