Recently bought a 420. Can't engage PTO when engine is running. Try to engage lever and get grinding gears. Stop engine and PTO engages. Clutch seems to be OK for shifting gears in transmission. I thought that would stop PTO at full compression of clutch pedal. Don't know for sure whether I have continuous running PTO or not. How can I determine that? Will external adjustment of clutch fix problem? Hate the thought of tearing into tractor for PTO clutch when transmission clutch is working.

5 speed trans has ind pto with a dual stage clutch.

I had a 58 like that. Turned out that whoever was in there last totally dorked up the adjustment of the two stage clutch. It is kinda complicated but the service manual covered it well. Requires one of those made out of unobtanium JD special tools. A simple substitute tool can be made.

It sure appears that you have the 5 speed with the two stage clutch for it to act like that.
