Gerald J (4020 Hydraulics)

I found your posts on fixing the hydraulics on a 4020 that has issues on start up with jerky hydraulics. I had the kit installed recently on the 4020. Prior to the install the rockshaft on the 4020 worked really well once the pump could get primed. Now, we have instant steering, but the rockshaft will not move up. It is almost like there is an air lock, but I am not that familiar with the hydraulic system to know if an air lock is possible. The kit was the only thing that was done to the system and it would raise very very slow when we first got it home and would drop instantly when the lever was pulled back. Now it won't raise at all. Any thoughts on what is the issue?

Thanks to all who might respond.

Tell us more about this "kit" was it a new trans pump,, if it was and the rockshaft was off it could be that the load/depth arm was not lined up correctly..

Gerald J is former YT member that hasn't posted under that handle in a long while. IIRC he posted about a kit to install a hyd check valve on 4020 to keep hyd oil from draining back to sump when engine wasn't running. Has stand-by pressure been checked lately? Where is L/D control lever setting? I'd suggest to put L/D lever in "D" to test hyd system.

I'll repeat.

Never knew about a kit but the deal is to drill and tap the elbow behind
tran filter and install a check valve to keep from removing the rockshaft
housing to replace the tube used as a check valve to eliminate hyd oil from
draining back from the hyd system overnite.
This new check valve is the ball and seat assembly used in the small hyd pump
of a utility tractor.

I bought the kit you are refering to many years ago from Deere. It came with complete instructions what size to drill and tap.I had it on a 3010 and took it back out as I felt it restricted hyd flow to much as the tractor had a 46A loader on it and was used daily.Maybe the tractor had other problems?? Thank you guys for your insight and guidance. Tx Jim, you were the winner. The L/D lever had gotten jiggled around. In the past at one time the lever had been broken off which allowed that to move. Figured that out and everything is working great. Thank you Gentlemen!
