4010 pto seal

Couple of questions on a John Deere 4010.
1} Is it very difficult to replace a rear output pto shaft seal? Or, better to keep adding fluid?
2} Does the quality of hydraulic transmission fluid make a difference in how much it will leak?
I usually buy the Tractor Supply cheaper fluid and run through it.

You don't say if it is a single speed or 2 speed PTO.

Either way, the seal is in a cover held on with 3 bolts, and nothing is going fall out if you replace it.

In addition, the 2-speed has an "O" ring inside the hollow shaft in the shift mechanism that COULD be leaking, but as likely as that the main seal is leaking.

A new seal will run $20 to $30 at DEERE.

4010 rowcrop or compact utility tractor? They are totally different.

Parts photo is of 4010 RC 540/1000 rpm pto shaft.

Thanks, honestly I don't know if it is a 2 speed. It is a 1961 JD 4010. It may very well be a 2 speed. I have used just to Bush Hog. Leaks just around the pto shaft in rear.

Fixing that leak is not as easy as just replacing the seal. With years of use the seal has worn a groove in the shaft that will often still leak with a new seal. You will need to find a speedi-sleeve that will fit the shaft, this gives a new smooth area for the seal to ride against. I fixed many 3010 and 4010's years ago. Sorry but I no longer have the part number. Tom
