Need advice on buying 4 cylinder 10 or 20 series tractor

I have 6 two cylinder tractors on my farm in upstate NY, but I am interested in buying my first "new generation" 4cyl tractor. In the auctions around here I always see 10 series and 20 series come up and they seem to go for reasonable prices. Of these new generation tractors, are there any I should stay away from because they have a bad reputation for problems?

Are you interested in the Waterloo tractors, or the Dubuque ones?

The 1010 and 2010 would not be a great choice. 3010 would be OK, but a 3020 would have better PTO reliability. Both the 3010 and 3020 can be challenging to find blocks and crankshafts for, as the engine used in those was not used in other applications like combines, etc. 2510 and 2520 are alos pretty decent tractors, a little lighter built than the 3020, but OK. They also will accept newer engines with a bare minimum of fuss.

Darn! I was looking for someone just like you a couple years back when I sold Dads nice original 2510. I was thinking the Howells might want to update, just like you now- but they're in Texas!

3010 wouldn't be bad other than if used for pto work all the time you could have issues. 3010/3020 have a balancer box in the oil pan of them which can be a maintenance item. 2510/2520 tractors are nice. 2520 is a little rarer and would be a nice one but you will pay for them. Are you searching for gas or diesel?

You don't mention HP. 3020 around 72, 2510 in mid fifties and 2520 around 60.
Why not go with the Cadillac? You can get a 4020 with the better six cyl engine
for around the same price. Keep in mind the above are all old and in different
conditions.

I'd also say jump up to a 4020 you can't go wrong if you find a decent one. I never liked the sound of the 4 cyl. in the 3020 and a 4020 is not much bigger in size. I have a gas one and went over when I first got it around 1992 ? and it has been VERY reliable all these years.

I'm with Mike,, I would take a 4020 over a 3020 any day...If you would happen to detonate the engine on the 3020 it would be terminal for it,, a 4020 you could have another engine in a day or so..
