Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the oil seal (Key 8) and the clutch housing (Key 23).

The oil seal is leaking and a small amount of 140W transmission oil is mixing with the 10W PTO oil.

The oil seal is being replaced.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the powershaft (Key 1), cam clutch (Key 15), clutch drum (Key 27), and the clutch drive disks (Key 33).

The clutch drum was slipping and all the clutch drive disks were replaced.

The clutch drum continued to slip and the cam clutch was tightened (clockwise) according to the service manual instructions.

The clutch drum still slips and the powershaft will not operate.

The first question is [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]could the heavier oil from the transmission cause the clutch disks to slip?[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

The second question is [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]will the heavier oil from the transmission cause any damage to the faces of the new clutch disks?[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

Get the transmission oil out of there and flush with diesel or kerosene, engage the clutch and dis-engauge it a few times with the PTO. running . The thick oil cant be compressed so the clutch slips . Put 10 wt. oil or JOHN DEERE 303 transmission oil . Read your op manual .

Item # 42 & 43 old design or # 36 & 40 newer design are what you adjust the clutch with. The farther apart you unscrew them the tighter it gets. So I would say this is counterclockwise. There is a specific amount # 15 has to move away from the brake plate # 17 for proper setting.
Heavy gear oil in there is NOT good for them but I still have had tractors with it in there and the pto still worked. These tractors may not of seen a lot of pto use too ? I have repaired many of them though.

Agree. My mistake on identification of correct parts.

Turned the special set screw (Key 37) in until flush with clutch adjusting cam hub (Key 36).

Rotated clutch adjusting cam (Key 40) upward (clockwise) one notch.

Went by and visited with mechanic earlier this morning and he showed me the wear and welding repair on the clutch cam (Key 15) and the wear on the brake plate (Key 17).

He told me that the brake plate was too tight against the clutch cam preventing it from turning.

This problem will be fixed.

As mentioned above, the oil seal will be replaced and 10W will be added to the powershaft housing.

Thanks for your help and the information.

As mentioned above, the oil seal will be replaced and 10W will be added to the powershaft housing.

Whenever the oil is changed in the PTO, the Operator's Manual recommends using 10W.

The 10W was put in there shortly after we bought the tractor and serviced it.

We were unaware that there was an oil seal leak until the clutch housing was removed.

There never was an over-flow of oil whenever either the small plug or large plug was removed.

We have the service manual SM-2017 (1-56), parts catalog PC445, and operator's manuals OM-R2035R (gas) OM-2032R (diesel) for our four Model 70 tractors.

We make it a practice to review each one before doing any type of repair or adjustment on any of these tractors.

Thanks for your help and for the information on the alternative transmission oil.

Is there any way to re-surface the disks?

or . . .

Should the disks be replaced?

Thank you for your help and information.
