JD AR Carb Update

OK - I got a chance to work on the AR carb this evening. After putting my glasses on, hehe, I noticed the carb is backwards from a regular A. The idle is on the inside and load on the outside of the carb. I was adjusting backwards per the A manual. I guess the A manual is slightly different from the AR manual.

Anyway, after idling the AR up to high idle, I tried to turn the load off, but the tractor started to die. I could not get the load to shut off without the tractor running rough and wanting to die.

On the otherhand, the idle valve that I thought was the load was only 1 turn open. Thus the backfiring due to lean mixture. I did turn the idle open about 2-1/2 turns open with the load about 1 turn open and the tractor now runs pretty good. I fiddled with it a little to where I thought I had it pretty good and the advanced the timing slightly and it runs pretty good.

Runs very good at high idle, but a little smoke at low idle. I guess it's pretty close. At least it no longer backfires when it is slowed down now. Not sure why the load can't be turned off if it is supposed to, but I guess I'll leave well enough alone.

Thanks to all for the help - Bob

Spend some of your grandchildren's inheritance and purchase these CARB tutorials....
I have never been sorry...every carb I rebuild is now a success....I have no vested interest in this company but their tutorials are excellent. Item # 27 & 33 are always clogged off with foreign material! As are the other fuel passages.

I'm not understanding what you mean by "inside" and "outside of carb? Sitting on tractor one is on left and one is on right. The later model AR/AO use the same identicle # carb as row crop "A" does. What year is your tractor and what is the number on it? If it won't run right with load needle closed, I would call builder and have him explain why.

On my 36 AO the bowel is turned so the fuel line is towards the center of the tractor.
