OK - I got a chance to work on the AR carb this evening. After putting my glasses on, hehe, I noticed the carb is backwards from a regular A. The idle is on the inside and load on the outside of the carb. I was adjusting backwards per the A manual. I guess the A manual is slightly different from the AR manual.
Anyway, after idling the AR up to high idle, I tried to turn the load off, but the tractor started to die. I could not get the load to shut off without the tractor running rough and wanting to die.
On the otherhand, the idle valve that I thought was the load was only 1 turn open. Thus the backfiring due to lean mixture. I did turn the idle open about 2-1/2 turns open with the load about 1 turn open and the tractor now runs pretty good. I fiddled with it a little to where I thought I had it pretty good and the advanced the timing slightly and it runs pretty good.
Runs very good at high idle, but a little smoke at low idle. I guess it's pretty close. At least it no longer backfires when it is slowed down now. Not sure why the load can't be turned off if it is supposed to, but I guess I'll leave well enough alone.
Thanks to all for the help - Bob
