what would be a fair price to replace the head bolts on a 4960,dealer wants 20 hours labor plus parts

(quoted from post at 06:37:14 07/17/15) if his techs are any good they should be able do an in frame overhaul in that time

My local(yocal) JD service manager quoted me $8500 labor to perform an in-frame OH on my 4255. I asked him what type of wacky tobaccy he was smoking!!!!!!!!!!!!

To change head gasket you will have about 20 hours in job maybe not quite. Injectors gotta come out and should be checked lotta little things like corosion on exaust will eat some time as well.Paul

it's the neighbor's tractor and he said it was leaking coolant from under the head, dealer told him it had a broken head bolt????? and would take 20 hours shop time and cost approx. $2500 to repair, I've not had one of them off myself but have seen one off to replace a bad head gasket and I'm no where near as agile as I use to be but I believe I can still beat their time

Hi If it takes you 20 hours at half dealer shop rate plus parts it's still cheaper ours are $120 an hour I believe . I'm guessing 20 hour is what the flat rate book said and that's what they charge if it takes 15 hours. sometimes you win on flat rate but others you can loose to.

Not sure on the motor in that tractor, I did an 8430 last year for a guy there was updated head studs for it. If you get them I hope you like turning wrenches, i seem to remember touching each bolt 3 times tightening the head . Dealers did it the first time the block was cracked between cylinders that they missed. Also they over oiled the bolts and threads. The gasket went 3 hours after. They hydraulic locked the bolts in the block holes and the torque wrench clicked off but the head wasn't right tight, so go easy on oiling threads.

I told the guy to get out of that tractor as the block was fatigued it needed a rebuild plus way to many other issues, and I wasn't going to do it and warranty a cracked block rebuild. he said he'd use it as is till it blew again it lasted 2 weeks, he came back and said he wished he'd listened to me then, when the tractor still drove. so make sure there is no cracks between the cylinders also.
Regards Robert

Yes ,some times people over look important things,,I always swab out the holes, and when I torq I make a paint strip on the head each time, then you can look it over after each torq run to be "Sure" that all were hit, I make 3 runs normally..
