How difficult is is to replace water pump on pony motor

I have 720D that is having milky white oil and I assume it might be the water pump that is the problem. Is it easier to pull the engine first to change the pump, or can the pump be replaced without removal of the engine? I have never pulled a pony engine, what is involved, and can one person do it alone?

If you have a chain hoist it's ok to do it with one man! Engine hoist then it takes two! There are shims under the pony that been to be reinstalled! Now is the time to check to see teeth mesh on the pony to flywheel. Mine was crooked and to many shims on the flywheel side! You will need to remove the water pipes, gas line, throttle linkage, disconnecting the exhaust pipe is different in that all you need is to slide pony while lightly suspended back towards the seat! That means the steering / instrument pedestal needs to move also! I remove mine completely! There are special bolts also holding down the pony! Keep track of them!

Freddy covered it pretty well. I have removed the water pump on a couple ponys while on the tractor. It can be a language expanding experience....all those cuss words you thought you forgot will come back to you.

Removing the whole pony isn't a bad job, you just have to make sure you disconnect everything. The water pipes can be the hardest to get detached, they tend to get stuck, at least for me. The small pipe on the water pump to the block is the hardest, there is not a lot of wiggle room.
