3010 STRANGE CYLINDER MEASUREMENTS

Hello All, i am working on my Father In Laws 3010 that they have owned for a very long time, but not from new. anyway. he spun a rod bearing on #2 and i have the engine balancer out so i can replace bushings in there. i was trying to see if i should do sleeves / pistons when i have it open, but i can NOT for the life of me match the measurements i am getting on pistons or insides of sleeves to the I & T manual dimensions. 3010 gas should have 4" sleeves the way it looks and 3010 diesel should have 4.25 bore, right? even 3020's should be 4.25 bore correct? well my pistons are stamped standard but they measure 4.18", what the heck and how can i find the dimensions for this thing or even find rings for it? i could just as well put rings in as i will be putting mains and rods in for sure, but what the heck pistons and sleeves do i have this motor? i thought i had wore out std sleeves but the piston measures accordingly, so they are apparently not wore out, but i don't know what to look for to get rings and dimensions for it. can any of you JD guys help me out please? thanks very much.

Well it sounds like you have .007 clearance for the piston in the block. Off the top of my head without a book to go by that is about right amount ! You have to have clearance or else it will lock up.

but if my sleeves started out life as 3020 sleeves in a 3010, back years ago, and they wear like always shouldn't the ID measure of the sleeve wouldn't i be expecting something over 4.25" and i am getting 4.190 or so. this thing hasn't been opened since early 1980's when my FIL's dad bought it and it hasn't worked more than a few good hours in this 2 to 3 decades that they have had it, mostly just sits and looks pretty, so they didn't do anything to it, but someone before must have put a different set of sleeves/ pistons in it? what would i be looking for? i would also have expected to see wear on the piston if it had lost diameter over the years but they look mostly unscoffed, so it just doesn't appear that this thing has wore much, but yet the dims don't seem to match up to the book.
thank you.

You don't say if you have gas or diesel or I missed it.
If diesel, overhaul parts for 3010 were 3020 size after 3020 came out.
I'm not sure about gas.
Either way metal was probably slung up so just replace everything.

Hello, it is a 3010 Gas and until he opened it and i started looking at it, didn't think anything had been done to it, until i couldn't match any piston / sleeve dimensions with the book and the pistons are stamped std that is what is odd. I Thought maybe some of you knowledgeable JD guys would jump right in and say oh ya that was common back in the day to put oversized pistons / sleeves from 'something' in there for a little more power. maybe that wasn't the case? how can i ever find rings for this guy if i can't track down the parent for the pistons / sleeves? they are 5 ring pistons for sure.
thank you all.

Since I have no reference material where I'm at I took a look at TY's parts site. I think your answer is there. Says something about gas engines with 4" bore to an overbore kit with 4 3/16 inch pistons with 5 rings.

yep that would be what i have i bet! thanks very much. never went to the parts section yet. was trying to track down what i had first. it seems to be a std thing that could have been done at some point in the past then. i feel better now. good deal.

thanks very much.

I think what you have is M&W sleeves and pistons . They were very popular back in the day . The 4.3/16 bore sounds like them . Gave the 4010-3010's about 12 hp. as I remember .

thank you very much Don, that does sound like what might have happened because it would have been 30 plus years ago when it would have been done right in the day, so i bet thats it. i hope to get it running again very shortly.
thanks very much!
