I have a John Deere 3020 tractor. It was running fine until I ran it out of gas. Now it won't start. There is spark at the plugs. I have tried shutting off the fuel and spraying either into the up pipe and also tried taking out the threaded pipe plug and spraying a little either into the intake that way. It does not fire. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any ideas or fixes.

It is a gas engine. I installed new points, condenser, and spark plugs today and now it will fire (putt on one cylinder) once in a while. I tried either and it did not help. I also installed a new fuel filter (see through) and it filled up with gas. I have tried cranking it with the gas turned off and on and at idle position and wide open and no difference. It almost seems to be severely flooded.

Well, hummm...assuming you've done some of this but since im not there Ill give a list..
Seems like since it ran fine until out of gas.. might be a dirt in fuel problem..
Clogged screen in tank..
carb needing cleaned..

Thinking out of the box have you taken off the fuel line at filter and blow air backwards into the tank.. maybe unclog something that got sucked up when you ran out of gas..

Years ago I had "issues" with fuel and my tank had alot of crud in it. Including couple feet of twine ???? amazing... anywho...Do you screen your fuel when you fill the tank.. that also became #1 after I removed the tank and cleaned it out..

Just trying to help you think by brainstorming...has to be a fuel/dirt/clog esp since the key seems to be running out of gas..might also try blowing air from pump to carb...remove lines on both ends of course..What about the pump.. ive installed new/bad pumps before too..

seems flooded... carb stuck, float stuck, etc. etc..I take my carb apart every few years because of the varnish that gets things gummy and I have issues.. spray carb cleaner through every hole, needle hole etc. etc..
