In late 37 JD changed from 10 spline to 12 axels and also added the cultivator mounting bracket boss below the steering box. Anyone know the serial number or month they made the change on the A?

Those changes were made at serial # 460000, which would have been late August or early September, I believe. Also changed was the seat went from the 24 hole flat seat to the bucket seat used up until 1947, and a bracket was added to the hood to keep the shutter rod from vibrating.

I forgot to mention a couple other changes. 1. the drawbar changed from the loop style to the hitch-pin style. 2. a new axle housing(A188R) which had smaller but wider bearings, moved the mounting pads, and downsized the "John Deere" lettering. This was done to make it similar to the G. 3. a new belt pulley assembly(A1864R) which changed the bearings used was implemented.

Thanks for the info, was a big help. Working on getting an A put together like we had at home.

I have a '37 JD A, 4628XX. I have a loop drawbar. I wonder if the owner changed it to that or they had some extras and put it on at the dealer?

It also has a PTO shield which I am trying to figure out if it's right or not. I know my dad's '36 B had the enclosed PTO shaft cover. Anyone know which is correct?

The later power shaft end guard (tube) with the outer end closed and the inner end having a flange that bolts onto the bearing housing.

Someone stated the axel housing changed so did the letters on the housing. The early ones had big letters and after the change the letters were smaller.
